I've scrapped a previous shopping list because it was all gonna be noisy, cheap and fiddly. What do you guys think of this? A friend recommended it as he has the same components, although he has the galaxy 6800GT. He said galaxy come with the best cooling, and the antec case is superb, with a pull out drawer to get rid of dust.

overclockers.co.uk

CASE: (1st one on list) : Antec Sonata Piano Black Quiet Case - 380W TruePower Silent PSU (CA-003-AT)£69.95 ( comes with fans)
120mm fans low revs, instead of noiser higher rev smaller fans.

VID CARD: galaxy 6600GT vid card. £129.95

COOLER: Zalman cooler, 7000b ALCU £18.50 ( comes with good paste, don't need AS5)

Total: £281.10

Why even buy a aftermarket cooler?

Honestly, it dont need it.. and unless your overclocking its a waste of money..

*shrug..

Tho they do "look" cool..

Hey tormentius, I wasn't talking about scrapping YOUR list that you suggested to me, I've still got that, and here it is :) :

AMD (Newcastle) Athlon 64bit 3000+ 754pin 512 L2cache £109.76inc vat

Asus K8V/SE Deluxe S754 VIA k8t800 ATX Sound Gig lAN Firewire USB 2.0 FSB 800 £80.23 inc vat

Total including VAT and postage=£195.86

Thing is, if I upgrade right now to that stuff as well, my £281 will go up to over £500, because with an athlon 64bit, I'd get a 6800GT instead of a 6600GT which would almost double the price of the vid card alone. But, I will actually upgrade the mobo and processor ala your suggestion a bit later this year hopefully. I think a decent case and cooling system is a good thing to have initially anyway.

Soapboy, the cooler I have at the moment is a cheap and nasty, very standard coolermaster. I suppose in a decent case like that antec with 2 x 120mm fans my temps are gonna be lower anyway, but why wouldn't I want to go to a better cooler?

I agree with Soap in this case. If you are planning on upgrading your CPU later this year to a different socket type there isn't much point in buying a new HSF now since it will be useless after the upgrade.

As for my suggestion on a system we'll chat on MSN. The system specs I recommended were from quite some time ago so you can get more for your money now.

As I was saying to you on MSN just now dean, but for the benefit of others, the zalman is so cheap at £18.50, that's it worth it just incase I don't end up upgrading anything else this year.
Also, this guy who suggested the zalman uses the same one over his athlon 64 bit and he gets 38C, in the same antec case as well.
:)

Don't buy a 754 pin Athlon.

I'm also not sure how well the 380watt PSU will hold up for future use.

Everything else looks good.
