Was playing CoD4 with Andy earlier tonight and about 3 or 4 maps into the game, I began hearing a loud fan noise from my case. It's a very quiet system, so the sudden noise was a bit alarming. After a little investigation, I decided to open up the case and stare at all the fans. Well, the culprit is the rear 80mm fan on the PSU. It stops entirely and struggles to start up again and then begins spinning normally. Soon it stops all over again and the cycle continues.

Anything I can do or is it pretty much finished?

Compressed air to see if you can clean out the dust. If the fan itself is indeed toast, you can unplug the PSU and let the power drain for a good long period of time (important unless you like getting shocked), open it up and replace the fan. Most have some variant of the Molex plugs and should be pretty standard, I've seen a few PSUs with soldered wires, you can decide if its worth the effort with a soldering iron.

usually in the cheaper PSU's, they use a sleeve bearing fan, and by what you're explaining maz... it sounds like the sleeve failed.

Found an 80mm chassis fan from a previous rig. Real kicker is that I opened up the PSU and realized one of the fans is soldered whereas the other has a molex connector. Guess which one needs replacing

Gonna have to wait it out and buy a new PSU. Shit luck

It won't, since the massive rear chassis fan is working perfectly. Last time something like that happened was a couple years ago when both PSU fans had stopped spinning unbeknownst to me until it blew a couple capacitors on the motherboard.

Think I'll bite the bullet and solder.

Turns out I would need to buy a proper fan. The one I'm trying to replace it has a Molex connector and thus, a ground wire. Can't replace the 2-wire PSU fan with this.

You can mod it to work, something like this:

Cut the wires
Twist, solder together
Tape said wires up or cap them with end caps.
