Quake3World

Needs:
Network based redundant storage for music/video/pictures/documents.

Wants:
UPnP, preferably compatible OOtB w/ Xbox 360, but should at least be hackable via uShare, Twonky, 360 Media Server or something similar.
Either support hot-swap for rotating backups or have an external USB port so I can do it manually.

My thoughts right now:
Galaxy 3500MGB-RAID Pro I'm unsure on UPnP/360 capabilities. I've e-mailed them, but they have not replied. Pros: cheaper than D-Link DNS-323, $130 vs $162 (from other retailers). Cons: unknown UPnP capabilities.
or
D-Link DNS-323 UPnP doesn't work w/ 360 using latest firmware, but hacking w/ uShare and Twonky has been documented to work.

Then 2 or 3 Western Digital Caviar SE16 WD5000AAKS 500GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drives. Nice and cheap @ $70 each.

Finally a VANTEC NST-360SU-BK 3.5" eSATA + USB2.0 Aluminum External Enclosure for rotating backups.

Any thoughts/recommendations?

If you have some spare hardware lying around, you could build you own running freenas.

Old PCs are power hungry and have large physical footprints. I want something small and energy efficient.

i would agree with Signa, but i also agree with you fender... i have my mediacenter running as a NAS..

But for the price/power consumption of older hardware, Dedicated NAS box's are a hard thing to beat.

the only thing that I'm thinking that could compare is a old lappie with a USB2 and a giga PCMCIA card in it.

anyway, thats enough of that, you obviously know what you want..

but i'm not sure i would know where to even start with that mang.

i would take a look at Xbox-scene's forum and see if its been covered ( i'm sure it has ) or reg there and see what people would recommend.. i'm sure your not the first to want to do this.

I've re-evaluated my needs. I really don't need to stream from NAS to 360. If I want serve content to my 360, I'll simply do it straight from my laptop via media extender.
So, I simply need to backup docs/media without burning dozens of DVDs. My new notebook should arrive tomorrow. It has a 250 GB 5400 RPM drive in it. I think I'll just order a new 7200 RPM drive, install that in the notebook and put the 5400 in an external USB enclosure and use that to make monthly backups . Store the external drive in our fire proof safe. Done and much cheaper.

That Transcend enclosure seems to come with nice "1 touch" backup software.
