ps2 component video cables?

are they worth the $20 everyone wants for them?
i finally got gt4 and i'm kinda sick of the muddy colors and the slight blury "jiggle" that happens at the begining of races... i hear the composite POS that came with the ps2 is the cause of these issues.
I don't have an HDTV but my 27" vVega has component input and does 16:9, so i was curious if the cables make $20 worht of difference to the picture if you're not using them for 480p.

why would i google gran turismo 4 and weed through 100,000 reviews and fan forums when i can ask a simple question.
and that still doesn't answer the question, do the component cables make $20 worth of difference to the picture?
(this is also my primary dvd player, since i'm a cheap ass)

hmm... if it takes the grey "dirtyness" out of the colors... i might think its worth it.
i saw gt4 running 480p on a 21"CRT and it made me really mad at how crap it looks on my tele.

ohh, you are getting washed out colors?

my buddy got the same, he switched to S-video and it cleared it up oddly enough.

colors are fairly washed out using composite cables by default since R/G/B are pumped through the same jack along with chrominance and luminence.

yeah, the digital cable looks fine.. but anything comming from the ps2 looks desaturated.
red-orange-yellow in particular all look dirty.

(digital cable runs off svideo)

was waiting for you. :P

in your audio/video-phile opinion... $20 worth of good?
or just accept that i don't have an HDTV?

you don't need HDTV to enjoy the bennies of component cables, man. get them.

*edit* this might not be much of an improvement from S-video on a non-HD set, but the difference from composite is noticeable indeed.

The 'fuzzy display' at the start or during certain races in definately some sort of bug, it seems somewhat random, I've mostly noticed it during night races (like going through that first night race you access).

All in all it dosen't happen very often. S-video looks okayish to me, but maybe I'm just going blind so I can't notice. =p

it helps a lot with games with a lot of text played on a big screen (like FF).

holy fuck... so i got the component cables.
night and fucking day difference.
no one can blast the ps2's graphics until they get the good wires.
i can't beleive i've been using the thing for so long with the shit cables.

Shit cable:

well worth the $20
fucking things should come with the ps2.

and i don't think the shaking is a bug in the game... it hasn't done it since i got the components. (~8 hours of use and not one shake, on the shit cable it would do it every race)

Yeah, I recently got the Joytech component cable for my xbox, and it made quite a difference. All text is much sharper now, and colors are brighter and clearer.

I got components for my DVD player, noticed a big difference on a fairly low-end TV (one of the cheapest that came with 1 component input set).

My receiver only has 2x component set inputs so I guess I have to choose XBox or PS2 + DVD player. :/

Wtf is the difference between composite and component? The cables themselves look the same :|

Except there are 3 (or 4) of them instead of just 1.

For video only.
Component cables split it into red/green/blue. All 3 cables are for video only. Where as with composite, 2 are for audio (white & red) and one is for video (yellow).

The reason I haven't gotten component cables for my XBox yet is because then I need another set to go from the receiver to the TV (currently have the DVD player directly connected to the TV, so if I plugged it into the amp, I'd need an output from the amp to TV). So the XBox component cable + other component cable = $50 and I'd still be using composite connections for the audio until I buy a $20 optical cable. So that's $70 to upgrade the cables just for one of the two consoles I have. :icon7:

yeah, i never knew the blue odometer reading on the speedo was supposed to actually be readable. ;)
it makes the textures a shit pile better as well; the city tracks have so much detail in the background now that its almost distracting.

----

and to contradict my previous statement, the "wiggle" is still there its just so insanely rare now and you have to be staring at some text on screen to even notice it at all...

these cables rock... makes me wonder what the VGA cables look like =]
