Getting a motorcycle on Monday....

It's not the best bike in the world, but it is fucking cheap.
$1,000 cash, and I get a 1983 Honda Magna V45. 750cc of fun, which I hear isn't the shittiest to start out on. It's got around 30,000 miles on it, and the engine was recently re-tuned or re-built, or whatever the fuck it is they do to them to make them not shitty from age.
Of course, that back seatrest is coming off.
Thoughts? Anything I should know before I fuck up and kill myself on it?

Don't forget to take it easy Postal
Wear the correct safety gear always, even if just a 2 minute ride to the local shop for something. That's when it will happen.
Watch out for those bloody cars too.
I used to have one of these years ago

Great fun and easy transport.....

Just be respectful of the machine (at least until you know what you're doing).
If you've not ridden before, a 750 is a nice mid-range bike to start out on. Might seem big some for, small to others, but it's a good balance.

Decent cruiser for the price you paid. I'd leave the back seat on too, unless you're a gay virgin who never intends on taking any women for a ride. If it was a sports bike I'd say definitely take it off, but it's not.
Looks like it's in nice condition too.

I plan on getting something similar for a first bike soon. 750cc is a lot of power for a noob driver you should be extra careful with that shit.
Here in Canada there's two types of motorbike license you can have, one to operate a bike over 600cc and one under. As a first bike, it's usualy a good idea to get a bike under 500cc for your first, it's plenty powerful but that bike you got isn't bad for a first bike. Just be ready not to cry when you tip it your first time. I was driving a bike like that when I was 10 years old. I couldn't even touch the ground.

That's a great deal you got! Magna's are good bikes.
Also, 750 would be huge for a sport bike, but for a cruiser it's only mid-range. Just don't drop it on your leg or something and you'll be fine.
I highly recommend this site:

I got a Ninja when i was 16, now I have a R6. Ive gotten into countless close calls but never layed either bike down. Just pretend everyone is out to kill you, and wear your shit, even if it means blowing another $1000 on gear, thats also something you'll need to consider.

Damn that R6 is a beast, I tried my cousin's R6 and almost flipped it over :P
It's a bit different when you've been driving a moped *:D* for a few years and then you try something like R6.
I fell in love right away

Yeah, leave the seat. Trust me. The size is fine and a good price too.

Yeah, you're gonna have fun.
With these old bikes, knowing how to turn a wrench or having the aptitude to learn how to is a must. It's close to the end of the riding season, so I would enjoy it while you can, and then dig into her over the winter doing some of the high-mileage maintenance stuff and fixing anything you may turn up when you're riding. If you don't want to work on the bike, don't even buy it. Things will go wrong, and taking it to the shop is not an option unless you're made out of money.
Give yourself an extra 5 minutes of "inspection time" every time you're about to take it out. Use this time to give the bike a good once over. Check your signals, tire pressure, chain tension, clutch cable, oil level, tire wear, etc. Bikes need more attention than cars.
Grease your chain about every 2-3 rides. I like the white lithium type grease that sprays on thin and sets thick. Find out if you have an o-ring chain, and if you do, make sure that the lube is safe for them. Some spray on lubes have stuff that will break down the rubber o-rings.
As far as riding the thing, don't be afraid to lean. As someone said, don't cry when you lay it over, because you will. You've got highway bars, so that should help. I wasn't so lucky and shattered my pickup cover. If the bike has points, I'd recommend changing to a dyna electronic ignition when you have some extra scratch. Make sure you're comfortable with the bike before you take a passenger, and when you do take a passenger tell them to lean with you and don't squirm unnecessarily.
Of course, my first inclination was to say ditch the sissy bar, take off that exhaust and throw a 4 to 1 on it.

I would not recommend the passenger trying to be in sync with the leaning. I think it would be a lot safer for a new rider if the passenger acted more like dead weight, basically added weight to the bike's weight. It's unnerving having force feedback you didn't cause or were unprepared for. Passengers should keep as steady as possible...it's a lot more noticeable on lighter bikes and this one seems to have some meat on its bones, but standing still is a good practice nevertheless.

When I take a passenger, I just tell them to keep their body in line with mine. As long as they do, it gives me complete control over cornering.
Speaking from experience, it's a lot more dangerous for a passenger to try to sit straight up when you're leaning into a turn.

Are you saying the passenger should stay completely vertical? If so, you're completely wrong. They need to stay in line with the driver at all times.

looks nice but... not as nice as the shadow vt1100 i modelled... it does look alike, hence the pic below : ]
btw, that back of the passenger seat isn't there so he can just relax and lean back all of the time. it's best for him/her to get close to the driver. This will automaticly get the passenger and driver in sync somewhat. It's much more a safety measurement so the passenger doesnt fall off the bike at the rear end..

Update: It was getting tedious trying to move the bike from the seller's house to mine, so on Friday, I had a friend who got back into town help me out. I drove him there, and he was going to ride the bike.
We got three blocks down the road, when he thought we were going to turn right. I kept going as he followed behind - he noticed, and made a last-second correction to keep going straight.
Turns out, though, the guy behind us was a cop, as well as an immense dick. He pulled over my friend and wrote him a ticket for being "unable to control" the bike, as well as having "improper eye protection". Funny thing is, he was wearing aviator sunglasses. Either way, the cop impounded my fucking bike.
