Anyone ever own a dog while living in a apartment? I recently gave away miniature pincher because he was a fucking moron, and I'll be getting a new dog shortly. Here's the retard:



Anyway, from what I've been reading most sites say the Boston Terrier is a good breed to have in small areas (Or really most all of the terriers, but Boston seems to be among the top)... but before I decide on the breed, was going to ask around and get some more info, whatcha think.

I not getting a chiwawa or the long weenie dog things, other than that I'll consider anything.

can you go on about the Pincher?

I had no idea why someone would give this kind of dog away (I've seen them go for anywhere from $300ish to, just recently, $1500) but the story was she was moving into a complex that didn't allow dogs at all, and blah blah blah. Anyway the dog craps turds out that only a buffalo should be able to produce, threw up almost daily (from all the shit he tore up and ate), had the most annoying high pitch yelp, not bark, that you've ever heard ladda ladda ladda. If I even thought about going outside without him, he would start walking over to the trashcan to knock it over and destroy my kitchen, and speaking of trashcan I bet the thing consumed an entire box of used q-tips over the six or so months I was graced with his lovely presence. I also have what appears to be flood damage in my living room from him pissing everywhere, I'll never understand how much waste that thing could hold at one time...

I could go on for much longer, but those are the things that really bothered me... And I know the saying of, "There is no such thing as a bad dog, just lazy owners", but I've had dogs from the time I was old enough to take care of one, so it's not like I really didn't konw what I was doing, but lets just say I know why I received a full blood registered pincher, for free.

And yes, I mad.

edit: I did leave too much stuff out he could get to, so those things, like when he completely destroyed the left boot of a brand new pair of Tony Lamas, the four or so shirts that he ripped etc I overlooked, but I could tell this dumb whore never worked with this dog.

The girl in the flat above mine has one of those little fashion dogs. Looks like a fucking rat, I feel like kicking it every time I see it.

Yeah I've got a Staffie-Lab mix in my apartment. My girlfriend and I adopted her at 3 months old and she's now just over a year. My kids found her when out with their mom at the grocery store. They contacted the SPCA and kept her for two weeks but no owners came forward and the SPCA figured she had been abandoned. So my gf and I adopted her and named her Hela, after the Norse goddess. She is a darlin' but what we didn't expect is just how fast she was going to grow (now 80+ lbs, lean, freakishly strong, and still going). For a bigger dog she has been very well-behaved in the apartment.

Lol, I hear you on the fashion dogs Grudge. My mutt can't stand the little rats either which has led to more than a few laughs.

I've always made fun of people that owned miniature/toy breeds, but unlike some people in the complex I live in there is no way I could keep a full sized active dog buried away in my little apartment all day... One lady has a Great Dane that lives a few rooms over, and I also know of a Rottweiler (he's been served multiple warnings that this breed isn't allowed, yet I still see it on a daily bases) and a Wimerianer that gets to lay around cooped up in a little room all day (all college students that are hardly ever home b/c of class/work).

I've always wanted a Doberman Pinshcer, but there is no way I could lock it up all day in here, and when I had the opportunity to buy one my broke tail couldn't afford it.

Yeah she can be a handful at times but she gets frequent off-leash chances to run at local parks. My work and school schedule have made it possible for her to come with me almost every day since we got her. I'm able to drop her off at my kid's place when in classes and she gets a chance to get into shit during those times with their little Pug (the only small dog she doesn't mind).

b4 we got a house we lived in an apartment and our yorkie was very well behaved. they don't have the inclination of tearing things up, very quiet...at least ours is plus they do not shed at all, in spite of their beautiful fur. They have alot of energy if you encourage play, yet they can just chill by you for ours if you want to relax...when I started working around the new house he would just follow me around without actually interfering witgh my work... what else do you want from a men's best friend.
And as an extra bonus they are very good for pest control like roaches etc. as they originally were bred in Britain to keep restaurants and the like free of rats.

anyway you might think yorkies are little pretty dogs for bitches with carrying bags but their attitude is outstanding...never needy yet very loyal.

I'll check 'em out, that's one I haven't even thought about yet.

And the min pins or somewhat similar to the yorkie then it seems. The pins were bred over in Russia (and as cold natured as they are I've yet to understand this) somewhere to slow down the population of rats and other small critters (from what I've read about them anywayz), and 'ol Mcgruff cracked me up many of times trying to catch a fly or two and other small bugs running around the place, one of the few things I liked about the little cunt.

i've heard terriers are good in apartments. was thinking about maybe getting one next time I move; but i've got to overcome the soft spot i've always had for beagles.

If you're going to have a dog in an apartment, then I hope you are able to take it running frequently, or something similar. Otherwise, be prepared to have the same problems you had with the pinscher.

I'd say lack of regular exercise is the biggest cause of behavior problems with dogs - especially in smaller living spaces.

Not saying you don't do that already, just thought I'd mention it.

Oh, and my brother had a jack russell in a smallish house, and that thing was a nightmare.

if you've had one, or been around one long enough... that "Soft spot" will fade... FAST.

I would suggest that the fucking moron is more likely to be you than the dog.

The dog eats trash (or anything else it is not supposed to) - solution: remove the trash and other shit it likes to eat.
The dog pukes - solution: modify its diet and if you can't solve it that way, take it to the vet and find out why it is puking.
The dog shits/pisses on the floor - solution: work out how long it takes from meal to shit, then time its meals accordingly.
The dog yelps rather than barks - solution: understand a little about the particular breed, before you take it into your house.

I have gone through all of the above apart from the yelping noise with my current two dogs, and I solved all of them.
I have taken in two strays and one dog that was chained up 23.5hours a day for five years and I have managed to get them all to become lovely dogs to live with.

I think instead of another dog that you are likely to give away because it doesn't behave in the way you want it to, you should consider getting a goldfish or a gerbil.

But if you really want a recommendation for an apartment dog, get a bull mastif -they are lazy fuckers who are happy to sleep all day and one of the only large dogs that don't require a large living space, also they don't make much noise. However they have a short life span, and are likely to cost you plenty in vets bills when they get older. (Im sure that won't be a problem, you will probably get annoyed with it and give it away before it gets old anyway)

one of my co workers had a miniature pinscher, it was such a high strung dog. I think it's just the breed. I would not want to live with that kind of dog, either. If I ever had a dog, it would be a lab.

Horton, you just need to be with the dog for a few months to understand what I'm complaining about... the dog was close to four years old when he was given to me, set in his "do whatever" ways his previous owner granted him, I did all I could with him in the time he was here.

yeah I guess I was being a touch harsh, I don't know the dog so maybe it was a total cunt.

I think a lot of problems with dogs can be solved, I treat my dogs the same as I would a little kid - I don't expect them to understand or learn, I just remove the problem - they eat something, I remove it. It depends on the layout of your home, I have 3 bedrooms, I am able to put all the fuckable items in a dog free room.

I had major issues with one my current dogs for about 2 or 3 years, she just hid from me all the time and pissed on the floor when I tried to put her harness on for a walk - it took a lot of patience on my part to calm her down - 2 or 3 years of being patient and cleaning up piss.

She still pisses on the floor now and then, after talking to the vet he found out she has weak bladder control combined with an undersized bladder - I take her out for a piss when I wake up, my girlfriends takes her out midday and I take her out once or twice in the evening/night.

There is a fine balance between accepting your dogs crap behaviour and being patient, and it can take more than six months to get a dog out of four years of bad habits.

Oh and another reccomendation, get two dogs - you will feel less guilty when you leave them alone, and they are not as likely to get bored when you are out and fuck with your stuff.

Boston Terriers are noisy, yapping, annoying, ugly mutants of dogs. I hope you love it.
