I just had an idea while thinking about how I dislike having to configure new computers to have a workstation for code development like my personal one at home is set up.

A website that provides a small virtual machine to user accounts to develop small programs (or large if their account is set up for it) on. The settings would be saved on the user's profile so the work environment is the same no matter what computer you connect from.

It would be excellent for working on multiple platforms.

Another option would to switch the VM to run different operating systems so you can see if your program is cross-compatible.

I want to look further in to this but I'm wondering if there are already sites like this out there? If so, any links?

That's a cool idea Would be really helpful for me too. But I don't think there are any sites like that in the net... We'll have to wait for someone to make one

I think it would also be a neat option because if you mess up the VM you can just toss it and get a new unconfigured one. Load up the configuration from your account profile and bam, ready to go.

I'm thinking about having something like a Tools menu to have a selection of development tools (with a chart stating what vms they're compatible with). Once a VM is loaded and connected to, then you can choose what tools to load in to it.

Have a separate section for your code where you can just dump a copy of the code into the new vm.

Then have the VM menu that displays a list of available VM and VM configurations.

I'm discussing this with a friend who's a web programmer right now. I think we're going to try to get something working.
