Hi,

I am an older guy (51) and previously played Doom a long time ago. I just recently got interested in playing games again and bought Quake 1,2, and 3 Arena. I don't know if it is appropriate to post this, but I need some cheat codes because I am getting killed too fast and the game is not any fun. I found cheat codes on the web, but every time I try to use them I get the message (cheats not available on this server - or something like that). I have followed the instructions on several posts on the web about how to get them to work in single player mode, but I am doing something wrong. I only play in single player mode. Help.

then try the cheats again and they'll work.

Valid map names are Q3tourney1 to 6 and Q3map1 to 20 or something like that.

Welcome (back) to the FPS world! It is really great fun to play these games. I use them as brain relief after 12 hours of programming or other demanding mental job. You simply cannot think of anything else when playing, because you are dead in a few seconds if you do. And it is definitely not only for teenagers: I am over 60 for example

However, single player mode is somewhat inferior to multiplayer over the net or against robots. The monsters are really dumb, they can only take you because there are so many of them (you should know if you played Doom). Anyway, Quake 3 does not even have single payer mode, you must always play against robots or humans. However, Quake 3 is much slower than for example the original Quake, so it is somewhat easier for beginners.

I suggest that you forget single player mode and start practicing against robots in Quake 3. You can add robots to the game any time. But you have to use console commands as follows:

1. Pull down the console by hitting the tilde '~' key.

2. Start the map you want to play by the command '/map xxxx' where 'xxxx' is the name of the map.

3. Add bots using the command '/addbot xxxx N' where 'xxxx' is the name of the bot (e.g. Sarge, Grunt, Biker, etc.) and
'N' is the strength of the bot (1 to 5). For example: 'addbot sarge 1' will add a rather dumb bot called 'sarge' good for target practice .

4. Get rid of the console by hitting the tilde key '~" again.

5. Go and kick the ass of the bot.

Note: the slash '/' in front of the commands is obligatory.

The 'addbot' command can be repeated as many times as needed (usually up to 7 bots may be included). There are tons of very good custom made maps in addition to what is shipped with the game. If you wish, I can send you a list of good maps that give decent gameplay.

When you get to a level that you are comfortable playing against bots of strength 3 or 4, you can start looking for internet games. But beware, there are very good players around who can kick your ass in no time. So the first few times on public servers will be rather frustrating But on the long run playing deathmatch games against human opponents is a far more rewarding experience than any single player campaign could ever be.

It's Q3dm1 etc. not Q3map1 etc.

I suggest, however, that you don't cheat and play Crash on the first level on "I Can Win" - the easiest difficulty - until you can beat her, then increase the difficulty.

Don't give up so easily. You'll get better at it the more you play. Crash is easy to beat cause she doesn't run, she walks everywhere, on "I Can Win".

Once you can beat Crash on a difficulty higher than the easiest, try the next map (level).

Seriously, I play online a lot, and get smashed regularly. I still have a lot of fun... and I get better continually. The only way to be the man, is to beat the man. The only way to beat the man, is to get beat by the man. Jump into the fire, you'll learn how to dance real fast.

i have a question where can you see your stats on quake 3

more info would be nice, a lot of mods have inbuilt stats in the scoreboard, but I'm afraid i don't think standard baseq3 quake 3 arena has a stats calculator.

What kind of stats are you after?

other stats than rounded amount of kills and medals in SP are nowhere to be found in q3. you'd need either a mod or a logparser to distill weaponspecific stats.

Hey gwardlaw I remember when I first got q3a and played the single player part. I was stuck on Phobos for a week....God he pissed me off!! Dont worry about the bots, just consider it training. Learning how to shoot, move and just getting comfortable with the game. Then come online and frag real people. Not knowing how a player reacts is way better. Or better learning how people react and out smarting them is awesome. I chase guys around that have my flag and I swear they just disappear! Always doubleing back, faking me out. Hehe staning right in front of me and I cant hit them with a shot gun. WOOT!

If you go on single player it has the medals you have at the bottom the red skull ones equal kills.

When i first got q3 i only played bots coz i was scared i would be a noob. But then, i got into online play. I admit i mostly play bots on the medium difficaulty because half the time the in-game server broswer dose'nt work.
