19'' - 22'' LCD suggestions

LCD's never have good black levels. My current one has a 450:1 contrast ratio and I hate it. The blacks are smeared so badly and the back light just bleeds through whenever it can. The monitor cost me 300 dollars in 03, so thats why I stuck with it untill now..

Anyways.. Theres a monitor on newegg

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6824009145

Its cheap and 22'' with 2500:1 contrast. I don't know if thats ACR contrast (which is complete bullshit sometimes right?) and I don't wanna get screwed with shitty black levels again.

If you had $200 to blow, what monitor would you buy that has the best black levels and response time etc? Thanks

That contrast ratio is the dynamic contrast ratio. If you read the fine print, the static contrast ratio will still be ~1000:1.

I have the 25.5" model of that (X263Wbi), and it's nothing special in LCDs. Backlight still bleeds through on the edges, viewing angle is still kinda lame.

They don't even list the static contrast ratio on their site, just the dynamic one.

Most TN panels are 1000:1, so assume it is too.

Not that I can see. I've tried all the presets, and lowering it further than the Text preset is just too dark to use realistically. It's only the edges, and it's only noticeable when everything is black, but it's there.

I'm not hugely impressed with the LCD, but it's big, and it was cheap, so meh.

i bought mine back in Oct / 07 and havent had a prob since.

iirc, i did raise the brightness/contrast a bit, the only thing i get is a little flickering on some grey background forums, (on some i mean 1/10) and this site being black/grey/dark grey i have no problems at all and games play VERY well.

to each his won i guess

As long as everything doesnt look completely black when its not supposed to, I'll be fine with a little bleed. Heres what my monitor looks like with the blacks crushing

The last picture is with my custom settings which show as much detail as possible, but everything looks extremely washed out.

I think I'll probably get the Acer. It seems really cheap, and I'm sure anything is better than what I experience currently.

It has a higher dynamic contrast... but Ive seen monitors with a 20,000:1 dynamic contrast, and that would probably be the equivilient of a OLED monitor's static contrast. So I don't know whether or not to take automatic scaling contrast seriously.

Wouldn't an ingame look different from monitor to monitor? A shot with a digicam would represent what the person is looking at from the outside perspective..

When I put my gamma down to "real" levels, I cannot see the gun. At all.. It just looks like a shadow.

When I raise my gamma up to detail-revealing levels, I can see his armor, the scope, the lens, the sight and all the other intricacies that an assault rifle would have.

True, just giving both as Som asked for ingame shots. And for the record the cam shot looks just as good as the ingame shots from where I'm looking. The detail is just as high and looks the same. Actually it looks better than the screenshots.

I wouldn't. Here's an okay explanation. I hear that site is never wrong.

Dynamic contrast ratio is basically measured by taking two panels, and making one of them all black. Then taking the other (just for control purposes) and making it all white. The ratio of luminence is the dynamic contrast ratio (i.e. the maximum theoretical difference between all black and all white).

Static contrast ratio is measured by black and white displaying on the same screen at the same time.

Contrast ratio in general is NOT an accurate number to go by. There are no units attached to the figures in question, so you never really know what they are in reference to.

Indeed. Viewing angle is probably the most important, IMHO. Mine is so big and I sit so far from it that just by moving my head around the colours shimmer. If I put a light, flat colour on it, it will be noticeably lighter at the bottom of the panel -- not because of the light or anything, just the difference in angle between the bottom and middle of the panel.

It doesn't really change any decisions, tho, as TN panels have crappy viewing angles, and that's what any affordable, big LCD monitor is going to be using.

Eh thats understandable. Even though my blacks are terrible, they become "visible" once I move my head to a certain angle. Then again, the rest of the screen becomes poop in another section. My current monitor http://reviews.cnet.com/lcd-monitors/ga ... mncol;psum Even if I dont get the performance I want, it'll be a big enough step up to justify $170 free shipping.

17" :puke:

u'd be happier with the acer 22" X223w or the LG 22" for $199 or less.

So I got my new 22'' and its amazing comapred to my old one. The thing is, it still crushes the blacks and greys, but thats ok, since it seems to only be affected by my viewing angle (as stated above). My last monitor did that, but it was way worse than this one. For $170 this was a steal. My eyes hurt because of how vibrant it is.
