Got a laptop for free, doesen't turn on, yeah I know.

Obviously it wouldn't when it was free but I was wondering if this is fixable, its a Dell XPS M1710, pretty nice machine.. or probably used to be, but it wont turn on.
Battery pack shows all 5 circles are green when its tested
i tried powering it on with just the battery, power button does nothing, tried with battery + wall outlet, nothing, and also tried just wall outlet, and no battery.
Now, what information I can give you is that when you plug the adaptor into the wall, the power supply shows the normal, green light, like it normally does, then the second I insert it into the laptop, I hear like a high pitched squeak that lasts for like 1 second then the power supply like.. dies, the green light goes out and I have to unplug it from the wall for about 30 seconds before I can plug it back in and the green light comes back on again.
This thing finished? I opened up as much as I could without having to take out all of those variable sized screws, I didn't see any burn type of marks, no liquids, it's just like... dead.
The person i got it from did not say if anything was wrong with it, its a guy at work actually, I told him I collect laptops and he just gave it to me.
Thanks!

There is a short in the laptop someware..
Crack it open and find it, it should be obvious.

It may be worth seeing if you can borrow another power supply and see if that cures the issue.

But the battery is working fine, shouldn't it work then without the power supply?
Thanks AmIdYfReAk, I guess i'll have to draw a picture of the laptop or something to sort the screws because theyre all different sizes... guess its time to take this apart

Yes probably right about that.
Have to wonder how the battery still has a charge if the power cord won't stay working for more than a few seconds...

I'll bet it's the power button itself.

like Foo says , how is the battery being charged?
i suspect the battery is dead and the power supply is the culprit.
my guess is .. the wire coming out of the power supply just before the plug that goes into the computer is worn out from bending and stretching, causing resistance.
a volt\ohm meter would be a good freind right now.

The battery has its own tester on it on the bottom, if you push a button it 5 green lights come on and when its dead its usually at 1 or none at all, ill get a meter and try and find out where there is a short because i opened it up and it didnt look burned or anything anywhere. I also checked the power button. Is this even worth all the trouble? Like will it even work the same ever again after fixing something like this?
Edit: I talked to him and he told me what happened, im thinking its not fixiable, he told me he spilled juice all over the top of it, and it ran all over the back where the ports and power connector go in, lmao

If it's a dead loss... ONLY if it's a dead loss.. then try spilling clean water all over the front in the same way, then leave it for a week or two to drain and dry out.
Obviously, remove the power cord and battery first.

Maybe isopropyl alcohol instead. Water, especially tap water, will have ions and metals in it. Or at least distilled water.

yes! a high % Isopropyle and cleaning it out will get it done..
that laptop WILL work again if you are able to clean it out.
Nothing that i can think of within the laptop Would be 100% dead from a little juice in it ( except the hard drive if it went in the Vent hole.
Blow it apart, totally apart... take your time, and clean it with isoprople alcohol and make sure there is no more shit in it, then put it partially together, then try it again
the juice would make a Suger Sheen on the motherboard, and would conduct electricity... the Iso will devolve it, and clear the short...
i'm on a laptop right now that a chick spilled coffee on/in, then tossed it out.
