Alright petals?

I am looking for a good webdesign program that is not too hard to use but gives you a lot of freedom. Any good ones you can recommend?

seriously... i'm not sure what a web design program is either.
if you're looking for a point-and-clicky editor just install adobe CS and everything you need will be there.
(dreamweaver, photoshop, flash, etc...)

if you're looking to write code I prefer SciTE

Come on guys. Dont be dicks. I think it's pretty obvious that he isn't going to be writing HTML or any code.

DC, I think what you're wanting is Dreamweaver. Although your probably going to pay a good amount for a legit copy.

I use Dreamweaver for PHP/HTML/Javascript and mocking up ASP.NET pages.

All of the wysiwig editors are garbage. I always end up just coding by hand, and using Dreamweaver to remember the links. Speaking of Dreamweaver, have they unfucked the smart objects integration in CS4?

dreamweaver throws in the least bullshit code. but design of both the visual and interaction kind does not come from the tools, it comes from you. dont forget that.

It all depends on how complicated of a site you need to design and manage. If it's just one or two static pages, you really don't need anything more than a decent text editor like Textpad or Notepad++. HTML and CSS is not hard, it's about as complicated as the UBB tags used on the forum.

If the web site has a larger number of pages and needs to be updated often, you may want to look into getting yourself a CMS (Content Management System) package which will do all the background management work for you. It sounds a lot more complicated than it is. phpBB that this forum uses is a lot like a CMS package, you install the software on your server and it has a text field where you type entries into and it spits out a web page for you. Blog software is another type of specialized CMS.

Post a bit more of the details of exactly what kind of site you want to achieve if you want a specific recommendation. A couple of static pages? A blog? A photo portfolio? A full website regularly updated with a database of products that customers can order?

if you want to just chuck up a single "placeholder" page with no dynamic content or anything fancy... google pages does the job.

How can Windows people not use Notepad++? I'd kill for an OSX port...
http://notepad-plus.sourceforge.net/uk/site.htm

For plain-text on OSX I use TextWrangler. The nicest thing about it is the way it specifically handles hidden and/or system files.

I use SiteSpinner2 by Virtual Mechanics. It's a WYSIWYG editor but serves my purpose. I don't want to learn html code. I have had it for five years. It is reasonably priced at $49US and comes with great support.

Ehm, you actually like Borland's IDE's? With their floating window things? I hate that.
