WTF?

I have a clean install of XP Pro (SP3). Whenever I click on any video file, Windows Explorer crashes. And unfortunately there are no intelligent (or helpful) responses when I Google this problem (and the error code). Microsoft's own help pages are also thoroughly fucking useless in dealing with this.

I can ignore the error and watch the video file (so it's not corrupt...it never was), move/copy/paste the video or other files and basically do anything I want within Windows Explorer...until I press the "Don't Send" button and Windows Explorer quits and restarts. The video works so I don't think it's a codec problem.

It doesn't matter which video player I use (WMP, BSPlayer, VLC) to play the video, Explorer crashes the instant (or within 2 seconds) of clicking a video file (any video file...regardless of extension or type). Sometimes the utterly fucking useless Dr.Watson Debugger shows up after pressing "Don't Send" and hangs the whole fucking system until I task kill the debugger. Seriously...Dr.Watson has forever been completely fucking useless so why is it there?

Anyways...the codecs I have installed are:

- ac3filter
- Indeo version 5
- Mataroska Pack (v 1.0.3)
- Nimo50 (build 7)
- Ultimate XP Divx Codec pack
- Xvid

Again...this is a fresh install of XP with only the above codec packs and EVERY FUCKING TIME I REINSTALL XP THIS HAPPENS!!!! I am not using thumbnail previews and I have yet to find a single registry "fixer" that didn't completely fuck my system...so I refuse to use them.

If it's happening every time you reinstall, maybe it's a conflict with the codec packs themselves. Try installing them one at a time and testing a few files before installing the next one.

If you're running that many codec packs I don't it's a 'clean' install. Chill with the MS rage.

At this point, you could try removing the packs one by one until you find the offender. Problem is that 'uninstall' isn't always a clean-cut thing with codec packs.

Try setting Folder Tools Folder Options Windows Classic folders

The crash is probably occuring when it's trying to generate the preview. Which shouldn't happen if you turn on classic folders. Also turn off thumbnail view if it's on.

As an aside... if you're using VLC there's really no need for any codec packs at all. I have no packs installed and probably the only thing I'll struggle to play is MOV and RAM.

Done and done.

It was the Xvid codec that caused the Explorer crash. After uninstalling ac3 and Xvid the only player that works is VLC...all others now crash when attempting to play files.

No big deal...VLC is solid.

As for chilling with the MS rage, after all the reinstalls I've done the past two years I've fucking earned it.
