He didn't say "grand" he said "grades." In a typical company there are several salary grades. For example: 1 - 3 might be part time/hourly, 4 might be $30k - $40k, 5 might be $35k - $50k, etc. The ranges usually overlap between grades. Companies typically give smaller raises to people above the median of a pay grade. Basically this caps how much you can make in a particular grade, forcing you to get a promotion if you want more money.

I was promoted at my annual review in December, and then got promoted again to supervisor last month. Kinda bittersweet with all the layoffs going around these days, but very reassuring.

the company i work just got bought for $500 million Canadian. the new company promoted me (actually i was already but now i have an official title) to head of the geophysics department with a nice raise.
i guess they did this to keep the key people in place and to let us know our jobs are safe.

my whole industry is crumbling , i am one of the lucky ones to still have work.
