I didn't mind it, it left enough scope for a film *prays* :>. Starbuck just disappearing like that left a bitter taste in my mouth, however

I loved the ending. Also, as an aside, everyone should watch this series as it is easily the best series television has seen in the past 10 years.

Hard to believe isn't it The instantaneous jumping around the universe bit. I to believe it was an easy out for the writes/scripters

when using chariots of the gods as a blueprint for world history you're bound to piss off the creationists in the audience; it order to achieve universal appeal in a self-declared 'christian' nation it becomes necessary for the author to include the "god" from their bible as part of the fiction, lest it be necessary for that segment of the audience to suspend their belief structure in order to enjoy the show. and/or, he threw religion a bone rather than endure the same zealotry that the original series did in 1978. if you want an explanation for angels you're supposed to reference real world religion because those are the same fictional angels that were included in the show.

assuming it was RDM's intention from the start for the series to crash-land on our "earth" 150000years in our past, forming the missing link in our evolution, and explaining modern man's presence here on earth .. then that says one or two things about "religion" here in the real world which would not be politically correct. in order for that premise to jive with real world history, you pretty much need to throw out christianity and creationism, in favor of "alien visitors" mating with primitive man.(von daniken's "alien astronaut" theory from chariots of the gods)

that was one of the controversies over the original in the 1970's. it even began with a narrative to smooth over religious zealots "..there are those who beLIEve that life here began out there..."; this was setting up the premise in such a light that christians might still find it accessible. (they didn't). the entire premise is based on the idea that mankind are migrants to planet earth; that we were NOT created here by the one true god, and the bible is basically bullshit.

but the way this version was written (by NOT explaining Kara, head six, or head baltar) this throws the religious zealots a bone: now we can chalk it all up to the "one true god" and the zealots can STFU. its very diplomatic, to include the one true god (unexplained) like this. and in fact the "only" way that RDM could get away with landing galactica on earth 150,000years on our past, without pissing off the decidedly christian nation to which this entertainment is meant to appeal.

so yeah.

I can see why they brought out the religion in the end of the series, and pimped the whole "one true god" angle as part of the fiction. from a writers POV that was a natural consequence of tying the series history into OUR history, in reality, where, most of the audience believes in such a god and would NEVER "suspend their disbelief" enough to accept that kind of timeline -- a necessary consequence of inserting the series into our reality.

I can also see why it went unexplained -- afterall this stuff is not even explained in our own real world religion, which you can now see as part of the fiction -- "angels" are not even explained in the bible from whence they came; if RDM had attempted to explain "angels" then that would mean wading hip-deep into the very controversy which they were included in the story to avoid.

------> the bit about humans coming to earth 150,000years ago was actually part of the script, back in 1978. so that was to be expected I think. its just a shame, to me, that as a result of this, some of the coolest characters in TV history are now explained by the show "touched by an angel" starring eddie van halens wife :\ *sigh*

p.s:as per the whole "this has all happened before" prophecy:

there's an implication in the story that god originally created man in his image so he could mate with his creation and beget a new race to replace his own role in the universe (call them the lords of kobol); the lords of kobol created "13th tribe" cylons in their image so they could mate with them and create a new race, which replaced their own role in the universe (ie:colonials are the second "strain" of humanity, derived from a half-breed of the previous human race and their cylons); the colonials then created current-generation cylons and mated with them to create a new half breed race which replaced their own role in the universe(the decendants of Hera - namely "US" here on earth - are a third new strain of humanity derived from a half-breed of the previous human race and their cylons); etc....)

at each cycle, the process of creation begets a new human race which is 1/2 cylon, and ultimately replaces the old one through years of interbreeding; it also begets a new race of 'pure' Cylons which go off to form their own colony.(in the previous cycle it was the 13th colony. this cycle it was the centurions who sailed away in their own base star)

the "Humans" in BSG are revealed to be half breeds between the "lords of kobol" and the "Cylons" of the 13th tribe.
(everyone on the show was "half cylon" from the start)

also Kara was a half breed between a BSG human and an "angel"(ffs).
so that makes her like... 1/2"angel",1/4cylon,1/8human,and 1/8"god" (heh)
go figure.

BSG was excellent (slightly biased because it's the only tv show i've gone out of my way to watch). it's a shame the ending was a bit daft and returned to a part of the story that no-one civilised would care about. and i wish they'd done some of the wrapping up for the twaddle fans before things started exploding.

you did catch the part where i said it was "good, even great at time"? i enjoyed all of it, but the quality fell off toward the end of S05, and that's a fact. it could have gone to the next level but instead they rushed it. the story of gater and zarek (sp?)'s insurrection could have been so much more interesting if they taken it into a morally greyer area, making zarek more sympathetic and so on

it's so annoying because they set themselves up for a great final season with all that stuff about starbuck's destiny/hera/final five, but just couldn't pull it off in the end. oh, and the way the attack on the cylon base ended was THE lamest thing in the whole series: cavil becomes an hero and then dead raptor pilot accidentally the whole shebang with a few nukes - an incomprehensible narrative lapse

seriously, if you think BSG was the best thing in 10 years you're a fucking idiot. it was very good or even excellent but there have been better shows, like the ones i listed

aye. couldn't it have been a brave pilot struggling with a dead crew and an about-to-brick raptor? there was so much potential for that final battle but it ultimately it was a damp squib.

had intended to launch into a spirited defense after that crack about bias - then i didn't think to gib the quote after remembering that the last show i actually watched every episode of was blake's 7, and that i stopped watching BSG for a while towards the end because it was getting boring.

still, the first couple of seasons were really, really good telly. even the religious stuff was tolerable then. will have to give firefly a go, been meaning to for ages.

Good point, so if a single one of those ships can hold a number of nukes that can take out a Cylon mothership, WTF were they all worried about before? Just load up a few more of those suckers and blow all they Cylons to hell.

I figured Galactica, being a crippled ship, would have gone on a real suicide mission and self destruct. What a waste.
