Getting weight off the stomach

I believe walking is as good a cardio exercise as running to eliminate overall bodyfat. I quite enjoy walking as it happens which is fortunate. If I walk about 2 or 3 miles a day or say about 30 to 45 minutes duration at a steady pace, can I realistically lose a pound or two a week? I want to lose about 28 pounds and get back down to about 145 pounds. I'm currently at about 175 pounds. I'm only concerned about getting my abdomen flat again which has expanded quite a lot over the last year and I know that spot reduction with situps doesn't work. It looks like a bloated beer belly but I don't do alcohol. The rest of me is still gorgeous.

I'm changing my diet. I've thrown out the white bread and the white sugar, and replaced it with brown. I'm basically getting calorie conscious.

Also, weights. Building muscle will replace fat. Without me having to join a gym, what small weights would you recommend I buy that can supplement my exercise?

Running's not as good as walking. You'll need to do a hell of a lot more walking to lose 2 pounds a week.

You've also got no control over where the fat goes from, it'll got from everywhere.

Get a bench (with a rack for a bar bell) and some decent iron weights, obviously including dumbbells and a bar. Then try to resist the urge to turn said bench into a clothes rack :)

Actually I meant to say between 147 and 154 pounds, not 145. I'm 5' 11". At that weight, I was very slim. It might be unrealistic now since I'm no spring chicken anymore, but I'd like to at least aim for that.

How much more walking would I need to do? I just drove a loop around the block to see how far 3 miles is, then came home and walked that route equipped with ipod. Took about 45 minutes. I found that pretty easy, except one part when I sprinted for about 400 yards and that knackered me.

I presume I'd have to be careful with how much weight I put on a bench barbell because there'll be noone to spot me if my muscles suddenly go to failure.

It could end up that way :olo:

Can someone please guesstimate my days calories and do you think it's pretty healthy? :paranoid: This is what I had today:

1 coffee.
3 sandwiches (6 slices of weight watchers wholemeal), flora buttery, with tinned tuna (kept in springwater) and tomato slices.
Cup of tea.
After walk, had a banana, an apple, and a couple of grapes.
And finally, I just had 3 pieces of chicken thigh (not skinless) which I grilled, a baked potato with a little flora buttery and a couple of teaspoons of half fat soured cream, and savoy cabbage which I boiled for a few minutes.

Nein.. walking is good. My diet might not be perfected yet but I highly doubt what I had today, tuna, chicken, fruit and veg and brown bread was horrible and unhealthy. I'd be more worried about all the cholesterol you're taking with all those eggs. I'm not gonna get obsessive with 6 meals a day, I don't have time for all that, I'm just gonna moderate my diet, stay away from crap, and combine it with exercise.

How long did it take you to lose 16 pounds?

and it took me 2 months...with little cardio...i cut down on the cardio on purpose to better figure out my maintenance caloric intake. for losing weight cardio is not needed...at all...

if u wanna lose weight the right way...find out how many calories u need to maintain ur weight then cut 500-700 calories off that and ur good to go. if u cut more than that ur just fucking urself...

I'm the same height. 160 is a healthy weight for your age. You are aiming too low.

Do some crunches and eat right and you'll lose your stomach. Not that hard...

Running is better than crunches for losing the stomach if that is your goal. Spot reduction doesn't really work. If you want to build up the abs, work on them, but if just losing the gut is your goal, cardio to burn calories, weight training if you really want to up your resting metabolic rate, with a good diet being about the most important thing.

Sounds to me like you have a high metabolism without any good exercise regimens to speak of, even though you have a decent diet.

I'd try the walking you're talking about, and also start a slow ramp-up of ab workouts. Abs are funny when you have a bit of a paunch; at first things seem to get bigger, but after everything tightens up a bit, you don't get the feeling that your intestines are dangling over your belt.

Of course I'm far from a nutritional scientist, but I think most people already have some idea about which areas they are lacking.

I've also heard both ways regarding walking versus running. I personally believe that thinking about it strictly in terms of calories and/or weight loss disregards the other effects that running has on your body. Walking is an exercise that nearly everyone can do, and sustain it well into old age - and it burns a lot of calories. Running is something that eventually has to stop for everyone, and if you don't stop soon enough you won't even be able to walk regularly anymore. Obviously that's not true for everyone, but I know a lot of people in their 50s who wish they hadn't pushed themselves so hard running when they were younger.

Thanks for the advice guys. I just came back from walk number 2, doing circuits around the park. I feel good. That might also be because of all the girls smiling at me. I did about an hour and 10 mins and seem to be doing about a mile every 15 to 20 minutes.
I guess I covered about 4 miles. Do you think jogging for an hour would be even better than walking for reducing fat, or just make it happen faster?
