I'm going to buy a blueray player today.

I've shortlisted blue ray movies at HMV, none of which I've seen yet. My first thought is Dark Knight or Iron Man. Which one or two of these would you recommend as a great blue ray experience along with being an excellent movie?

Get those 2. Wall-E and Apocalypto are the next choices.

Blade Runner Final cut
Juno

It's all a matter of personal taste of course. The much sharper Blu-Ray picture combined with broader deeper sound can make many average movies much more palatable or even fun to watch.

Thanks guys. Play.com has some great prices. Hmm, choices, choices! Well, I think I've decided Dark Knight as the first one to get. Not sure which to be the second, whether to get wall-e because it'd be nice to see computer animation in blue-ray and I know it's a cute and funny movie, or iron man. Blade runner is certainly of moderate interest. I've also, for what it's worth, checked out scores for most of these movies on rotten tomatoes, of which dark knight, iron man blade runner and wall-e are all 90%+.

The IMAX scenes in The Dark Knight are probably the best looking I've seen in a blu-ray movie.
The Planet Earth is beautiful as well.

Given the age of the movie, the Blade Runner transfer is awesome. Definite future buys are Apocalypto, The Watchmen, and Iron Man.

I thought The Incredible Hulk (the one with Edward Norton) was a very good looking Blu-Ray.

I bought The Watchmen this Tuesday. The transfer is good, but not jaw dropping. There's 24 minutes of extra footage. The super-duper extended version w/ The Black Freighter story incorporated is coming in December.

I popped into blockbuster and they're doing any 4 blu-rays for £10 for 4 nights, so I'm gonna get dark knight, iron man, wall-e, and transformers if they have all those. I tend not to rewatch many movies so rather than spend loads buying them it's better for me to rent most movies. I want to also get blade runner, planet earth and close encounters of the 3rd kind which I'll rent at some point if not today.

Meanwhile, I just got home from richer sounds and this is what I bought ...





£7.78 for the hdmi lead, £310 for the tv and blu-ray player (I got them down by £10), 2 free richer sounds mugs, and got refunded £1 for my parking which is something they offered I decided after demoing, ('fantastic 4' was the demo disc) that the LG BD-370 blueray player was much faster on loading than the sony BDP-S350 (the sony had been recommended to me for it's reliability), perhaps slightly cleaner image, and some other extra features including youtube. I had returned the samsung tv I'd got from argos and started afresh with richer sounds for the same model tv at a cheaper price. I can't wait to watch some movies!

what's the actual res of blu-ray? 1920x1080? i've been toying with the idea of getting a player for my PC, but only if i can watch fullscreen without upscaling (my screen res is 1920x1200)

Watchmen is out on Monday, as is Final Fantasy 7: Advent Children Complete

Zulu is fantastic on BluRay. A great restoration of a classic film, it really leaps off the screen.

If you want something modern and action-packed, Shoot 'Em Up is a cracking good ride, and damn good quality.

Oh yeah, and Pan's Labyrinth is glorious on BluRay. Gullermo Del Toro's rich visuals really suit the medium (with that in mind, consider Hellboy 1 and 2; reasonable stories, but great visuals).

Similarly, a film with great visuals, but a middling story, is The Fall, by the same guy who did The Cell.
It's a bit artsy-fartsy, but it looks so sumptuous, you can forgive it a lot.

Yes it is. 19" is still fine if somewhat small. At some point, I'll buy a 37" or 40" tv and transfer the player to that.

Yes, I could have..

Aeon Flux tells a mediocre story, but looks AMAZING, so if you just want eye candy, I'd highly recommend it.

House of Flying Daggers is also a very visually lush film.

Planet Earth, as people have said.

And if you waste time on 10,000 BC you're an idiot.

EDIT: Oh yes, and I cannot recommend WALL-E strongly enough. Amazing movie in every respect.
