Q3 on widescreen monitor

I just bought a beautiful 23" LG widescreen 1920x1080. In fullscreen, the Q3 display goes very dark but when I alt+enter and have Q3 in a window, it's fine, it brightens up as it should be.
How do I fix that?
Also, is there any way to configure Q3 for widescreen because it looks a bit stretched and squashed.

Ok, I seem to have fixed it like this and added to my autoexec.
r_mode -1
r_customwidth 1920
r_customheight 1080

Still need to fix brightness. Strange how it's perfect when windowed but not fullscreen. Since changing resolution, it's now windowed practically fullscreen size and still bright.

i'm betting something silly like the gamma setting is being handled by the OS when it's windowed and by quake when it's fullscreen. there's either a check-box in your video adapter settings to fix this (software override?) or you just need to up the gamma/brightness in quake and not play windowed.

r_ignorehwgamma 0

What kind of rig do you need to get 125 fps in Q3 at that res?

Thanks menkent, long time no see. :)
I've got the ATI catalyst control centre. Had a look through its menus but couldn't spot anything like that, unless you know the ati ccc and a specific thing to press?

Ah, I'll try that command.
I don't really know the answer to your question.

Thanks, it's absolutely awesome, very sharp! Dunno how I managed with CRT for so long. Loving the wide screen and high res.
The mouse cursor needs a taxi to get from one side to the other. :p

Not nearly as beefy a rig as you might think. Newer hardware is capable of running Crysis and similar games very smoothly at that res. Running Q3 at that res shouldn't be much of a problem. I can run Q3 at my current res of 1680x1050 with loads of room to spare.

Phenom II 940 BE @ 3.0 ghz
XFX 9800 GTX XXX
4 gigs ddr2 dual channel @ 800 mhz

Can I borrow that taxi? Just ordered a 25".

r_ignorehwgamma 0 fixes the darkened screen as a result of changing r_enablepostprocess to achieve higher fps so this might work for you as well.. although not the exact same situation.

Im playing on a 18,4" widescreen myself as well, although on a lower resolution then 1920x1200. Took some time to adjust but it's all fine after a good amount of games.

I have an acer 23.6' monitor ..

I have a clean install of quake 3 arena and q3pointrelease 1.32

I have tried to use r_mode -1 .. seta r_customwidth and seta r_customheight with and without seta cd_fov .. in both console and the config file

this is not working for me .. I have a small screen in the middle of my monitor with dark edges all round ..

any ideas? thanks in advance al.

Find a res both your graphics card and monitor support.
Should be the native res of your monitor. You may be able to add a custom res in your graphics card driver options.
(From the desktop right-click or Control Panel) Display Properties/Settings/Advanced/Your-graphics-card-name
It should be there somewhere. It's not on mine cause I have an old graphics card. So I use a program called PowerStrip to add custom resolutions.
Usually you'll need to restart your PC for the change to take effect.

Also, did you do a vid_restart in Q3?

Alternatively, press + to increase screen size and remove the edges.

thanks for the replies ..:D

I have a recently new computer .. the native resolution is 1920 X 1050.

the graphics card is handling the latest games no problem so I dont think that it an issue .. it is a ati 4870 1GB.

I did try vid_restart ..

I have tried setting 1024 X 768 in game and I am getting a full screen but the config in both the defrag and baseq3 is still showing 1920 X 1050.

havent reboot the machine so will try that now .. let ya know how it turns out ..

I meant reboot for custom resolutions to be added to your graphics card driver (or Windows).
What you do in Q3 won't require a reboot.
