don't think anyone else here lives in oxford, but there's "the first major exhibition ever" (allegedly) of Steampunk art at the museum of the history of science. went yesterday for shits 'n giggles
http://www.mhs.ox.ac.uk/steampunk/
there's some video as well as a fuckload of pictures

MHS has a pretty vague rule on taking pictures: no flash, no tripods, no filming - but the signs don't explicitly say 'no photography, period', so i might take a chance later today and go again with my camera
in the video the guy explains steampunk as a "what if", i.e. what if modern tech was designed by victorians. well i can answer that: IT WOULDN'T FUCKING WORK. the reason there are no victorian flying machines is because these bozos didn't understand the power/weight ratio (a lump of brass powered by steam will not fly) or had the faintest notion of lift or drag (a square lump of steam-powered brass with bird wings won't fly either)
still, if you liked bioshock you might like this

steampunk's become a little too oversaturated to be fresh and original now, but that doesn't detract from it being completely awesome, and those thumbnails look like that exhibition has a lot of the good stuff

. Sneak some pics, especially of these:

Oh there's a video, wicked. Those figurines and the time pieces are exquisit. The guy that made the ornithopter wings is a total bell end.

that wall lamp by the main organizer guy is pretty sweet as well. And yes the ornithopter and e-pod guy is a bit of a fuck-wit.

5 minutes in, and the only thing remotely steam punk-ish is the fact that she has goggles. Fuck off.
As for that exhibition; it needs some steam-powered stuff...
