Returning to a 10 yr old game :)

Hi,
I recently decided to dust off my copy of Q3:Arena and boot it up on my awesome pc and play it in its 640x480 glory :P.
I played on a few servers for a day and all the old memories returned of how fun this game is. I then went on to install the latest patch: 1.32 i believe, however i found the servers i enjoyed were missing, i learned obviously that the protocol code is different for each patch. So i uninstalled everything and reinstalled the standard game: 1.11. However when i now play the single player of the game, instead of automatically starting the next level when i click next (after completing a level), i get thrown back into the main screen. Any suggestions?
Also when i re-installed the game, all my data remained(even though i deleted the folders). What could be the problem for this?
Thank you for any help, im rather new here!

Well... I suggest you upgrade to at least 1.16n, the last PR that is network compatible with 1.11, but I recommend 1.32c. If you really want to stick with older releases, check the console for error messages (pull it down with the tilde).

Cheers for the info, i think i will go for 1.16n. I ending up having to re-install windows the other day so i installed the base version of the game again.
Just one more question, i find that when i finish a game on multiplayer, or a level in single player, i get sent to the menu screen... any idea why this is?

The same advice applies, really. Getting thrown back to the menu can have one of several causes, so check the console for warning and error messages. '/condump condump.txt' will dump it to a file, which is always handy for a post-mortem.

You should see it in the baseq3 directory (assuming it's writeable).

Ok, I ran Quake 3 arena as admin and performed the condump again, here is the output. I removed any irrelevant text before the first line (it was just people chatting saying 'gg' etc.
Can you find any reason in here for my getting sent to the menu screen?

This. If you look at the lower right of the console, what version does it say you are running?

Q3 1.11 - I only have the cd installed, no patches or anything or mods installed.

You're reporting problems with a version of Quake 3 that is known to have bugs (hence the various patches that have been released for the game). Right now the best advice you can follow is to update to 1.32. If that's too far up for you,
at least go to 1.16n as I believe no protocol changes have been made between 1.11 and 1.16.
Additionally, you could install the Q3 point release switcher:
http://www.quaketweaks.com/version.html
This allows you to smoothly switch between different versions of Quake 3.

Well i never had this problem before so i would like to think there is another problem apart from "buggy build".
I actually just realised something. I have GTKRadiant 1.4 installed on my system. Could this be impacting that particular error im getting on Quake 3?
Code: Select all
ERROR: Couldn't load scripts/base_door.shader

Possibly. Try removing everything from your baseq3 except the pak*.pk3 files. But why the reluctance to upgrade?

But why the reluctance to upgrade?
Im a bit OCD when it comes to what gets installed on my machine. I like to keep it clean. I know it must sound weird.

If you want to keep your machine clean, upgrade. 1.32c fixes a security issue where a malicious server can take over your machine.

Hehe, doh. Would love to but my favourite server is on the same protocol as the one im on. Its a CTF and really fast and fun. Are there more servers like this on 1.32c? or are they all TDM(DM)?
BTW ^misantropia^ thank you very much for the advice to clean out the base3q folder, it worked a charm

there are ctf servers on 1.32... likely a good deal more of them than on 1.11 (holy shit that's old).
