My Aunts comp got bent over yesterday. This was called "worm.win32.netsky". The solution was found here;

My question... would any of you go through all of this to clean a comp used mainly for Freecell and casual surfing? Or would you just go fer a fresh install?

if there is no real horde of personal files and programs, its much easier to format and reinstall.

Any other completely uninformative and unrelated bits of information you would like to bring into this discussion?

The ISP locked down the intenet connection. So, only choice was to wipe the disc and fresh install. As soon as internet connection was severed, the worm started to destroy the operating system faster and faster. Anyone seen this thing before? Can this thing infect a mobo or cpu? Thing kinda gave me a scare.

@ ^misantropia^: I like green. :)

LOL. When I first clicked the link for solutions I saw the spywaredoctor download and assumed he used it so I thought I would point out that it is garbage.

On second look I understand your post

No, you can't readily infect a mobo or CPU with a virus.

If its just the netsky worm, symantec has a removal tool for that on their website.

A friend of mine got this on his laptop yesterday at work. After some looking into it, it turned out not to be the netsky worm but another virus ("internet security 2010"?) that leads you to believe you have the netsky worm. It also rotates telling you other infections, and corrupts some antispyware apps you may have installed. It disables some windows apps and task manager. The fix was to download the malwarebytes installer and a program called rkill.com, and place them on a flash drive. run the rkill.com to end the worm and other bad processes, then reinstall malwarebytes, update it, and scan / fix. you should also uninstall other anti-malware programs or reinstall them due to corruption.

I agree though, this was really a pain in the ass malware to get rid of.
