Is there a discernible difference in precision/smoothness/accuracy if say, I changed my MX 510 800dpi for a 1600dpi MX 518 or even a G5 2000 dpi? Would it help give me more frags? If I did buy another mouse, I think the MX518 would be better since it has the same amount of buttons as mine, whereas the G5 seems to be missing the button at the front tip in front of the wheel, and I use that a lot, it's right under my middle finger.

Speed, mostly.

the more DPI the mouse reports, the quicker the mouse will move within windows/games/etc... but the more it will pick up on subtle movements. Its something that you'll need to configure on each game and etc to fine tune it to what you're used to.

I'm kinda in the same boat, my MX500 is getting a little, well, old/broken.

I really can't quantify the difference when moving from 1600 to 3200 (from an mx518 to a g9), but there is a difference and I hit more rail shots at 3200.

Basically when you double the DPI you have to halve your sensitivity.

More important seems to be the report rate. The g9 can be set to poll at 1000hz and combining that with 3200dpi is pretty slick.

Seriously though, I can't tell the difference on the face of it, but my stats improve significantly in QL.

I've been using a 400 dpi logitech.... but just got my hands on a free razer lycosa (think it's 4k dpi?) so it'll be interesting to see if there's a difference

I had a lycosa once... took it back in ~1 or 2 days after buying it. It's an ambidextrous mouse, terrible on the hands (cramps)

Higher dpi will be a lot more accurate and having a higher polling rate will make a big difference. Be sure to turn OFF any mouse accelleration settings!!!

Ok cheers guys. Might get me a better mouse at some point then, though I still like my MX510 for now.
