HELL-o,some questions etc.

Hell-o there. Nice to see this forum still alive, at least somewhat.

Do you guys have these days when nothing works? Strafes go all over the walls, rails miss like half mile here and there. Damn, i´m having one of these days rigth now. ANy good advice to get the drive on? Blah, this really sucks.

Anyways, i´m new here,not new Q3, i suck at it, love it and somedays hate it(or actually myself, failing in every damn thing. :rolleyes: )

And hey, thanks for all tips and links and stuff, helped me out quite a bit anyway. Damn, wathing those vids etc. How deeply i suck, heck, i've been playing fps games since 1993 and i'm still darn bad at it. Just thought if some of you people here could give me a lesson or few some day? That would be cool. One thing i really really need to practice is 1v1. That's my worst side in this, and i know very well it should be the number 1 thing to learn...

I just made my account to Quakelive, first time online for many years... Haha, last time i played against some living opponents was, i can't remember, Q2 was THE game back then. So now i´m getting back to my roots with playing, slowly, but surely.

I hope my English doesnt suck to bad? I'm Finnish guy, so... :D Hmm.. I wonder if theres still some Finnish servers running..

Btw, my nicname is sort of a self irony... Cant really remember where i took that.. Was it name of some clan long ago?

Took me about 6 weeks to get back into quake and start playing properly. Stick with it :up:

Other stuff: Setup your config correctly, find solid mouse settings, make sure your desk is setup right :D

And yea, you already hit the spot with this, i'm having a small couch like thing(what's hta english name for that?) which i use and my right hand wrist makes an uneasy angle when playing, makes it lil harder, but i´m quite used to it. Well, should change that.

And damn my sluggish net connection, just checked is there any servers running with Qtracker. Lot of them, although almost no players online and lovest ping i saw was... wait. 133. Well, it's probbably best i can get with that peace of junk i have. Darn fucken 3G. slow as hell, but cheap. Hmm, maybe if there were someone near hosting a game, could be lilttle better. And all other net trafic off. Maybe, i'm really not into these net things, i know just how to play some games and do some photoshop. :rolleyes:

Hmm, i have some friends here who might be interested to set up a small lan some evening maybe, too bad that they are even worse players than i. But i dunno, i should ask these guys. Would be fun. I'm getting lil tired to bots.

Good practice, but their movement is too predictable and hard bots seem to always be aimbots. Well, it depends on the map, but sometimes these aimfukkers get really anoying. q3md17, dm6 and dm7 for example. Any place with RG and/or LG. And those bots with "decent" aiming skill are just too easy to frag. At least it quite crowded FFA. Which i like the most.

Hmm, bu the way, how do you guys enjoy your FFA? I mean in terms of player/bot count?

I prefer 4 - 12, usually me + seven of these darn bots in some small/medium sized maps. Its fun to keep the game hectic enough. Hmm, larger maps need much more accuracy to come to play and same does less players.

Back to the original topic, this morning nothing worked, nothing. I got pissed off, because even some easier bots made me suffer. Since then i've been just surfing etc. But this forum + some fraggin' vids make me want to slice something with railgun, so i think i'll give those bots hell later today... Or maybe i'll join some online match if theres someone to play with. As a damn fragbait at least. >:D

About the config, i noticed some strange things with my monitor/framerates etc. I use this old 17" what hte heck is this old fassion 4:3 monitor in english? perkele. Anyway, its max supported refreshrate at 1024 is 85Hz. 85fps is also Q3's default framerate cap if i remember correctly. I tried few other framerates.(my pc is very capable what comes to Q3, (4Gb of ram, 3,2Ghz Pentium 4 CPU, Nvidia GT220 1024MB @ 1600Mhz etc.) 100fps wazs ok, 125fps stutters helluva lot. Turning Vsync on doesnt help much. Higher framerates---> more stutter.

But at 85fps. It´s perfect. Just thought about strafing. Mostly it seems that i just need to practice some more. I'm quite new to whole technique, in my time with Quake II those guys i played with didnt seem to know whole thing. And later i was already kicking OAK, crbot and other nice artificial fragbaits. Anyway, my settings are just nice, only thing i worry about is my slow net connection.

Almost did bridge to rail, was it yesterday or day before. Today i havent even tried. I need some inspiration. Maybe some vids from tube. If i find something out.

This small monitor is pain in the ass by the way. Luckily my bandmate is giving me one of his old 21" trinitrons to me for free.. Then it's gonna be Q3 in 1600x1200. I want to test my just bought cheap GT220 to it´s limits. I wonder what could be the biggest framerate it could rum Q3 at 1600..I have no idea, yet.

O well, damn, this post is long and plenty of offtopic in it...

Hell, yea! Thanks foo, very much. These lines did some miracles. No stuttering and all places nicely lit. Althoug i did put texture quality higher somewhat. I have some quite kick ass skins so. ;) But hell yea, this is great! I'm damn tired, but not too tired for some fraggin'. I'll go kick some bot ass now. O'yea.

EDIT: This config is perfect! Works like there's no tomorrow.. I just kicked some bots to oblivion. Placed second, only the one nightmare bot wan me... With some ~25 frags. Damn thing. I tried bridge to rail too... Didn't make it. But from RG to bridge i almost did it... I dunno if it might be little easier that way or not.

This board doesnt seem to be very active? All playres gone to Quakelive forums?

Bah, anyway, im starting to really miss faster internet connection... Hell, at least nightmare bots are starting to feel bit easier...

Actually these are quite fun to play with. I have quite a few custom bots in use, some are aimbots, some are not. Few use gauntlet a lot and some have new scripts, plus i use the enhanced UI mod, nice to have variety with botskill. Fractional skill level and such. Of course they are no match in fun or difficulty compared to human opponents, but with my skill or lack of it, they pose a nice challenge. Good aiming practice they are. Too bad they move really badly... I thought i'll try brainworks, bad thing is i couldnt get enhanced UI and brainworks work together. Any advice how i could do it or are they totally incompatible with each other?

Anyways, i'm having fun with these bots... If i just could have faster connection here. Then it would be different. Or then just play quakelive. I dunno, somehow the vQ3 feels better. I'm so used to it..

By the way, i have to say i love LG now, before i couldt hit a thing and now it starts to get easier. Thanks for all advice i read etc.

Does someone know any tips for vertical aiming? That's something i'm really bad at.. (Any tips, other than practice, practice, practice, that i've heard a couple of trimes. ;))

If you're playing offline try:
pmove_fixed 1

then try bridge-to-rail.

Offline physics is a bit whacky without the setting above. Although it's a bit stuttery for me when set to '1'.

Ok... I think i did some experimenting with that setting earlier, but will check.

The previous settings removed stuttering almost totally, lets see what this will do.

Thanks, gonna try it out right now. :)

Map is great... But i suck. I've been jumping around for last maybe hour or two, damn, i got to the second platform maybe twice... Damn, i don't know what i'm doing wrong. I'm trying to mimic these vids i watched, i just cannot make it no matter how much i try.

This kind of continuous failing all the time kills motivation to practice... Bah.

That one, i saw that in some video.. Good one, levels and all.
Green is the easy, is the red lane hardest, or the blue one?

That's a really useful map.

Today i learned the first jump, with almost no place to run first and speed up a little, it was damn hard one, but now it goes easily... Circlejump helps in tight corridors? Damn, this jumping, hard thing to learn correctly, but so useful... I'm bit old fashioned with my playing. No strafing at days os Doom. ;) Back then it was all wallrunnning and silent bfg trick.

By the way, is the Mt. Erebus place the first map in gaming history with a place you must use a rocket jump? (well, sort of..) i remember some custom maps for Doom II where you had to use archviles attack to get to the bfg. Too bad it wasn't possible in original Doom games to aim at your feet, rocket jumping could be older trick if that would be possible.

Thanks for that other map, i'll check it out later, i bet i'm gonna have fun with it.... :D

Thank you really much, now this was just what i needed. Did little trying already, made it to the fourth platform of the green lane few times, just little more speed and accurate mousework, and i'll do the whole thing.

Any advice for mouse usage? I have already found nice sens for myself, about half and soem accel, vorks fine, but i'm too hasty with it. You know, when some intense battle goes on, my mouse using turns to mess. Maybe i should play more 1v1 or 4 - 6 bots or something? I'm too hasty with mouse when there's lot of things happeng really fast... This isn't a problem with slower pacred games..

Its all preference.... but over the years I've moved from a high-sens, high FOV rocket-focused setup to a low-sens, no accel, 110-FOV well-rounded setup and significantly improved as a result.

Mouse sens is a hard one to compare though, best to talk in terms of cm-per-360-turn on your mouse mat.

I run sens 1.5, accel 0, m_filter 0, in_mouse 1 with a g9, takes about 3/4 of my (huge) mousepad and a big arm sweep to turn 360.

I used to have ultra high sens, almost as high as possible, now almost half down from that setup, works fine... I tend to keep sens quite high anyway, because of small mousepad... I'm trying to get used to lower sens with some accel, help with accuracy so much. Hmm, i think it takes maybe 15cm to make 360 turn slowly, with my current acceleration, it's very easy to make quick 180.

I cant remember what kind of acceleration i now use, it was some Enhanced UI preset, which i might change, maybe. But this far it works nicely. i have FOV at 110 degreees too. Now i have bigger monitor, i might try 115. I have old Sony 21" 4:3 monitor, use 1600x1200 res at the moment. This thing is damn old, little out of focus, but works. Our guitarrist is going to give his 21" Trinitron to me soon, so this is going to get improved. Very nice to use larger screen after and even older 17" thingy.

Maybe i should buy a widescreen monitor.. i dunno, kind of used to these old fashion things.

Did somebody mention that RL is easy to begin with and becomes harder and harder by time fepending on opponents? I've noticed this with even the bots. Rockets are wuite easy to dodge, i even made few times a narrow escape using bots rocket to get away quickly, then finnish the bot with shaft or MG.

Kinda funny thing, many beginners complain that MG is underpowered, hell no. It's damn powerful when used accurately. i think the weapon balance in Q3 is one of the best ever made... Every weapon has its moments and uses and none are underpowered. Altghough the BFG sucks big time. Breaks the balance and it's not very cool either. Hmm, i wonder how could Doom/Q2 type of BFG work with Q3? Powerful as hell, but really slow to use, thats more like a balanced "superweapon" than this plasma spiting quick total-annihilation device.

Just thought about the damage/baöance between weapons, PG has the most damage/second, but LG is way more powerful when in right hands. I mean, what it takes to bring somebody from full health/armor to gibs? maybe 1,5 seconds or two..

PG is amazing in close combat, especially TDM. Damn near impossible to wield with a ping, though.

Yea, close up its really accurate too... Haha, FFA, quad and PG, one helluva frag fest... ;) At least against bots, people play smart. :D

I did it! I goddamn finally did it! Yea, green lane is done and once i made it, i can do it almost all the time... Only problem is i get too long jumps, i many time flew over the last platform. :tomato:

I guess now it's time for the blue lane next. I tried it, first too jumps must be perfect... Specially the first. I'm quite proud of myself, i made the first lane very quickly, maybe 3-4 hours of practicing and now i did it. It's amazing how much this practice does to my playing, i tried bridge to rail + just some running/strafig around the map and im like twice as fast as i used to be before strafing practice.

Thanks guys for the maps, this made my day.

I think now it's time to launch a match with few bots and see what i can do... Damn. I must master my strafing skills, like people have said, movement is half of the gameplay and accuracy is the other half.

Hey, what is this problem: I tried to get botmatch on... Some of my bots don't show up. "bot [bot name] not defined" <-- What does that mean? Fo i have too many pk3's on at same time? I have lot of bots/models/skins and few custom maps...

EDIT2:
Problem fixed.. I got tired to the messy baseq3 folder and made an clean install + i downloaded everything from enhanced IU to all the bots and skins & some classic maps.
