Quake III Arena - (I'm returning)

Hello, I returned to the game so I'd like some help and advices :)
I had a break from fps games and since I played non-fps ganes long Q is like new to me. I'd like come help about cfg, like commands for (fps boost, less lag). I forgot everything and I don't think call of duty commands will do xD

Most important thing is, how to enable dual processing for the game, I know it's not set as dafault. In cfg, I have changed the dafault seta r_smp "0" into seta r_smp "1". But when I start the game it freezes on intro start and I have to kill the game over task manager. This worked before and I didn't have any problems.

My PC spec:
  • -Windows 7 64bit (dual processing worked before on this same system I don't know how)
    -AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 5200+ 2.60GHz
    -3GB RAM
    -ATI Radeon HD 3870

SMP support is pretty much broken in stock Q3 but it (mostly? fully?) works in ioquake3.

On a side note, the game probably won't be noticeably faster with r_smp 1. In pathological cases it might even run slower.

Well, when I had it my fps was 50% higer. And since i have dual core cpu, why not that the full advantage of it?

Even with smp 0 q3.exe will still set affinity on all cores of dual/quad core cpus. I'm pretty sure challenge q3 exe (since 1.42?) just disables affinity on second/third/fourth core. There is a nosmp exe that arQon published before the fix in challenge q3 that essentially did the same thing, which I use when playing on OSP/baseq3 servers. Also note int he ESR thread, there is/was an nVidia driver issue though the thread is from 2008.
