Dell Ultrasharp (widescreen, or not?)

Ive been eyeing the dell 2001fp, and the 2005fpw. They have the same viewable size, but the normal screen is only 16ms, and the widescreen is 12ms. Would any of you go for a widescreen monitor? What are your opinions?

widescreen looks great for movies. plus i play quake3 at 16:9. so i would get widescreen.

i see no logical reason NOT to get widescreen. but, i'm biased like that.

The only drawback Im seeing is the resolution, it only goes up to 1680x1050 on the widescreen. I play most games @ 1600X1200. Hmmmmm

the lower that second number is the faster the game will run. just run it full screen or widescreen. most new games offer it as an option. or a custom resolution.

faster pixel recovery and widescreen....unless the prices are vastly different I'd go for the widescreen.

I bought the 2005fpw a month ago. Absolutely no regrets. And this is the first time I've bought an LCD, laptop or otherwise, that didn't have single dead pixel.

I've got a question that I've been wondering about for some time.

Does the aspect ratio have any effect on performance of video cards? Are they in any way more optimized to run at 4:3 ratio over 16:9 or whatever? Or would you actually have slightly better performance at 1680x1050 over 1600x1200?

I really like the look of the 2005FPW, but I don't think I'll be buying a new monitor any time soon. I wish I could get some money for this CRT, but from what I've seen it doesn't look like anyone would pay more than $75 or so. The MSRP was like $500... :(

It shouldn't make any difference at all. If anything, fps will be slightly better on the 1680x1050, because that's a lower overall pixel count than 1600x1200.

You're probably aware of it already, but you can get some really good deals on Dell monitors if you use coupons. These sites are great for tracking:

http://www.dealcatcher.com/dell-sb-coupons
http://www.spoofee.com/index.php
http://www.techbargains.com/coupons.cfm
http://www.gottadeal.com/dell.php

Look out for the 35% off + $50-75 extra = around $425 for the 2005fpw. I've heard rumors of it being even less than that but haven't really looked into it.

I saw a deal a week or two ago on http://dealnews.com/ where I think it was under $400...375 or something.

edit: maybe I'm wrong, I can't find an old deal under $422. Either way, more money than I have now. :(

Oh yeah, http://anandtech.com/ did a comparison of it vs the Apple 20" Cinema Display just yesterday here: http://anandtech.com/displays/showdoc.aspx?i=2400

Does it mess with images like the laptop widescreens? Small images like the logos on http://www.microsoft.com , that seems to be the complaint with the widescreen versions.

Also last week it was selling for $375 shipped 2nd day. I have a deal site on my laptop, but it's at work right now. Dell's deals run thursday to wednesday.

I like the way that Dell claims the exact same panel, in their monitor, has a faster response time. Honest that.

Isn't aesteatics the branch of linguistics that studies butchered words?
