Doom 3, Quake 4 and ETQW had editors that shipped with the game. The SDK usually followed shortly after release. My main concern is what they are going to do with all the source megatexture files, it's a ridiculously large amount of data even if you are downloading off of bittorrent.

That's precisely my point, obsidian. I'm sure there has been something, but I can't think of a game since Quake 4 that the editor was included on disk. That was almost 5 years ago. Most companies don't do it anymore, so you can't create custom content. You get bored of the games after a couple months and have to buy the next one.

In regards to the megatextures, wouldn't they be included as well? The game uses them, no? :dork:

I don't know; this looks so much like Borderlands. I know the game mechanics will be completely different, and the rendering style is very different (Borderlands had this pseudo-cel shaded look), etc, but I am looking at these outdoor clips and all I can think is Borderlands.

I am not that excited yet, though I will definitely play through Rage, regardless.

The megatextures are *very* large textures that are compressed and unique to each surface. If you want to create a new custom surface (a custom track for example) you'll need to create a new unique megatexture for it as well, laying out the road surface, cracks and rocks. "Painting" the megatexture requires the original source files, which are kind of like decals or Photoshop's rubber stamp tool that you layer onto the map geometry and then bake that down into the megatexture. The original source files that id Software uses for Rage is supposed to be a huge amount of data. I don't remember exactly how much they quoted but it was huge, like 100GB or something. You don't HAVE to use megatextures, but then everything will look like Doom with tiling textures, etc.

I can't wait to paint the rock, eeeyyy! ;)
