Editor will ship with Rage
Editor will ship with Rage
I thought you guys might be interested in the news surrounding Rage at E3. There are a few gameplay demos and interviews. The game looks very polished and those people doing the interview and reviewing it seem to be very impressed (one guy seemed almost flabbergasted). They seem impressed with its graphics, gameplay, AI and animation - that's a good combo, it means it'll probably be more than just a "tech demo" which is the general critique of some of id Software's recent work in the previous generation.
Tim Willits mentioned that the editor will ship with the game. That's a start. The main question is whether (and how) they will ship the SDK. The megatexture source files are a huge amount of data so I'm not sure how they intend to share that content. It certainly won't be released with the game, if anything shortly afterwards, maybe via bittorrent.
Here is the main thread and links to videos in General Discussions.

Seriously though, it's sweet to hear they're shipping the game with the editor.

Don't want to spoil the fun, but I'm afraid we will see even less custom (valuable) content then for ETQW. Anyway, this could be worth waiting game, but I'm not awaiting next great (like wolf, doom or quake) title tbh :/. Ofc I WILL play it, maybe I'll be disappointed positively
. And still so many months until release.

I also don't expect too much. Not because I don't trust in id software but because I'm not really into those kind of games. For me large, open world == extreme boredom. Maybe this game will change that, you never know.
(And it can't get worse than Wolfenstein, that's for sure.)
If the game is worth playing I guess some custom content will show up, an editor never hurts to create an active community for a game.

Re: Editor will ship with Rage
I'm not into open world either and id Software had said that this isn't an open world RPG. It's a directed FPS game with some side quests, so I think you can expect more FPS action than anything else. The people who have seen the gameplay demo first hand have said that it's not like Borderlands, or Fallout and it's not a corridor shooter. It has some of those elements mixed in, but it's still a good old FPS shooter at heart. The technology looks cool and the megatextures does add something unique.
Also out in 2011 (hopefully) is Splash Damage's Brink. Preview for that is looking good too.

Re: Editor will ship with Rage
For me, the best games from id soft ever were Quake I, II, III and Doom 3. Graphically and atmospherically great (well I'm adult and fearless (
) but I'm so scared when I play Doom 3...), but always the story was little discriminated (not in Doom 3). I'm really curious with what material they will come. Graphic of Rage is great (that terrain mmmm....), but what that story? Freezed man wake upped after 100 years and racing in the mountains? I don't know what to expect. Also I'm happy from not open world.
I'm only scared from "new editor". Look - GTKRadiant is conceptually best editor of ALL. User-friendly, EASY. If you want to build some small arena, you can do it in few hours, not like in UnrealEd or other. I don't want them to change principles of building levels - so I hope they will not (for example - Epic games changed whole structure and principles in UT3). And if they will not I will be happy

Re: Editor will ship with Rage
After first game vids, I have totally lost interest about this game. For me SD is doing one more time exactly same thing. Team based mp game, which plays exactly like ET and QWETm and only is set in new enviroinment. I don't like to buy same product for the 3rd time :/.obsidian wrote: Also out in 2011 (hopefully) is Splash Damage's Brink. Preview for that is looking good too.
I'm a fan of id. I have almost no interest in games for years now, with few exceptions. I have most of id games on my hard drive forever, and that's simply one of companies which I'm loyal to, they are the best (Wolfenstein is not id game at all if you ask me

Btw, what do we know about rage mp? I'm not sure I can remember anything about this atm.

They're still keeping pretty quiet about the mp portion of Rage. I hope it is really cool though.
Re: Editor will ship with Rage
To be fair, "2nd time", you didn't pay for the first product seeing as how it was free.ShadoW_86 wrote:I don't like to buy same product for the 3rd time :/.

Re: Editor will ship with Rage
That's true. But only half of it
. Fact is, that no matter how hard is a mapping for a game, there will be custom/community content for it, if this game is good. If games is good enough, ppl a will spent hours and hours to create something cool for it (fact that there is less, and less such games, is quite other thing:)).
But the fact is also, that we (maybe it's a little bold) creators, are boring
. lets face it, we are getting old, and we simply loose interest in gaming and mapmaking/modelling. We can discuss does games were better in past than they are made now, but the great factor of how much we like em is, when we play it. Years ago there was no other games than quake/doom. These were the first games in genre, so even if they weren't such good, still they would be greatest for us. When I was younger I had a paaion for games, now it's gone
. Most of the old games I played, and though that were great, now I would call simply average. And younger persons have it much harder to know a modern engine and do something with it. Most of modern games is very complicated to contribute to. We had that opportunity to learn on much simpler games as first doom/quakes, where you could put a map in few days with simple editor. It was great experience to learn basics of mapping, which younger player don't really have. In past few days I saw a vid of Rage editor - now you have to be a professional to do something with it (still it looks very cool, can't wait to put my hands on it
).

Would have been harder to map for Kings Quest 3 back in the day.I thought Crysis was the engine to learn but after a while I didn't see the point of getting too into it. I know Rage will be my new hobby\time killer.

Re: Editor will ship with Rage
Shadow - problem is maybe also in the frequency of making games. In 90's and early 00's there were few games published during a year. But today... One game in thousands of the others can't have so big community as Quake III/Unreal. Also, today there is so little experiments. Developers simply live the motto "do what is well-tried".
Re: Editor will ship with Rage
i believe its more make something that will not ruin are investors... which is extra sad imo
but at the same time.... the new rise of indy developers is looking really sweet. so maybe the industry really is turning more and more into a mirror of the film industry.
and im seeing the big budget games more and more like hollywood action crap, if you want substance you have to look further afield...
maybe....

Re: Editor will ship with Rage
I got the impression from the last Carmack speech I watched that mods and community projects were going to be pretty tough and not really viable for tech5. It was almost like he was ashamed of the fact that an era of modding was coming to an end due to the complexity of the games now. Then he switched focus on how the mobile market is a great new area to develop for... Maybe I misunderstood him, but I know I felt sad and disappointed. My guess is Rage will be more suited to console anyway.
