A friend of mine owns a very popular bar here, and he's offering me a job as a bartender. This place is very, very busy, and I've never bartended before. The only thing that relates is being a waiter. Anyone who's been a bartender have a recommendation or suggestion?

Yeah, I figured I'd have to take a class to get a liquor license, and there's probably other certifications. I'm thinking it might be a good idea just for the money and experiance. I don't like stressful jobs but it sounds too fun to pass up.

Plus people like Kracus tip you 5 bucks every drink.

ahh you live in Portland. The OLCC is so easy i got a 100% They give you a book to read and they also go over damn near every question on the test before taking test.. class and test is about 3 hours give or take a few. If its a busy place you will really need to know how to make the drinks and the names of them. A bartending school probably wont be bad idea. You will also need to get a food handlers permit. heh thats easy too i did it online also got a 100%.

Good luck, tips are usually pretty nice :)

Definately at least buy a book on how to make mixed drinks. For the most part though people are fine with telling you what's in a specific drink. The only thing that I remember not really liking about bartending is the late hours.

One problem with the books on mixing drinks is not everywhere does the same mixtures - the places i worked at when i was younger all had different ways of making Long Island Iced Teas.

Basicly, go along, enjoy yourself. I always found bar work as much fun as a good night out. You'll get hundreds of stories to tell (like the one with the sunburnt fat old woman in the purple dress getting fingered on a table at the end of the bar - EW >< ).

Plus, someone gives you shit - shortchange, undershot and do something HIDEOUS with their drink, like i always did. ALWAYS RESPECT YOUR BARMAN. :D

Nope, just some fantastic nights behind a bar, surrounded by mates both behind and in front of the bar, shorting assholes, feeding em dirty pints and giving the spare to people i like, chatting up the girls, collecting numbers and more often than not, going clubbing after.

Eh, i admit, i cant juggle bottles that well, but its a great laugh re-enacting Cocktail incredibly badly :D

Plus, to top it off - Barmaids.

A woodpecker walks into a bar and asks ' is the bartender here?'
Someone answers ' yes, it is '.

( I'll get my coat)

It will at least give him a general idea on how to make most drinks. That way when somebody asks you for something you never look like a COMPLETE retard. Just a partial one.

It's fun (for a while) but somehow you seem to lose contact with the day people - like family and friends and stuff.

That's the one thing I don't think I need to worry about, all of my friends go to this bar whenever they go out.

I'll check with my friend about bartender school when I see him next.

Yeah, definitely :D Its worth picking one up for basic pouring techniques, like the old spoon/baileys thing for a B52... Always pisses me off when i ask for a Flatliner (layered tequila, tabasco and sambuca) and its uttely lineless...

Aye, another one to watch out for is when they put the nozzle of the pump in the beer itself, because they've probably been doing that all night to every pint they serve. Very unhygenic.

Yea, but now you're gonna feel like Rachel in F*R*I*E*N*D*S when all the gang go to the coffee shop and she's botching up their orders :( (hope you turn out better at bartending that she was at coffee shop waitressing)
