Does a projector with DLP have the same picture quality/brightness as a normal TV?

Wait, let me put that a another way... I'm buying a new TV, but someone has offered me a brand new Acer projector for 10% of the price of the TV I want.. It's got a max res of 1280x1024. Would you ever use it instead of a tv?

You've watched shit over a projector before right?
Just asking because many people have problems viewing stuff over a projector, and gets headaches.
I'm one of them, so, if you have this to then you'd want to go for the TV.

Also, projector bulbs burn out every now and then and are quite expensive to replace. Make sure you're wiling to cover the cost of replacement.

do you have a brand and model name of this projector or a link to its specs?

there's a guy at work that really knows his shit about this

Not really mate. Projectors are great for huge viewings on wall etc, but they can't match the image quality of a good TV and DPL are the worst out of the two. If you really want one make sure you get LCD. Oh and all projectors suck at horizontally scrolling objects.

Damn, I thought DLP was a decent technology..

It's an Acer PD112

I've been offered it for £200, do you think I should take it at that price?

You'll have to sit outside your caravan to watch that.

Well, I got it anyway..

He had a laptop as well, so I took that. I got both of them for £325. How do you think I did?

The laptop has a Sempron 2800+ with 512mb, 40 gig drive, dvd writer, wireless g, and widescreen monitor. The projector is what I linked to, the quality on a dirty blue wall is pretty decent, good enough for xbox, I reckon...

dlp in a television set is quite decent

I hear that DLP projectors (not in television sets) aren't that hot though

mitsubishi makes some very nice dlp sets

good deal if you ask me. not the DLPII technology, but as long as you mind the room lighting when viewing, you'll be fine. at least invest in a white sheet instead of the coloured wall though.

Ah, right, I was going to ask why the fucking thing was like a lightbulb.

Yeah, gonna get a decent screen for it tomorrow, I don't want to spend buckets though, would a white wall do the same job?

Also, is there any way I can tell how long a bulb has left? Are there any tell-tale signs that I can look out for?

Depends on the surface It's projected on. If the wall's smooth, you shouldn't notice that much of a difference.
Then again, a white sheet isn't excactly expensive. :p

if it's a flat white and your walls aren't textured much (if at all), that would work.

as far as i know there's no way to PHYSICALLY check that, but, some projectors have lamp hours in the config or history menus (our NEC and InFocus projectors do.)

forgot to add.... try setting up your projector using a dvd player as a source and either a video/audio setup dvd such as Sound and Visions' or Video Essentials. if neither of those are available to you, grab a dvd that's THX certified, look on the back of it, and make sure that there's a THX audio/video setup on that disc. keep in mind those THX setups are supposedly per film, but it's better than trying to eyeball black levels and such.

You've lost me.. Does the projector need calibrating? The picture is pretty good.

no, i wouldn't calibrate it per say, but i would certainly adjust those basic levels. it's all accessed through a user menu, not a hardcore service menu.
