That other revolt: Libya

I could have posted this in the Egypt revolt topic, but I really think this shit deserves a thread of its own.
After 41 (!) years of his dictatorship, Muammar al-Gaddafi seems pretty adament to strike down any form of protest by any means necessary.
Any means necessary being groundtroops gunning down protesters, snipers sharpshooting protesters, and now even jets bombing protesters.
The country has been hermatically sealed; no media, no internet, no cell phonage.
This guy has had it coming for decades, and I trust this revolt will succeed, but at a very high price.
Only promising thing is that the entire Gaddafi clan has allegedly requested visa in Venzuela (thx Hugo!)

Gadaffi is a born survivor and a brutal cunt, i'm not placing any bets yet

But all the signs are towards this thing succeeding so far, army personnel defecting in the east of the country, senior air force dudes disobeying orders to bombard the protesters and flying to Malta to ask for political asylum instead, people around the country generally not being afraid anymore...
Damn him for blacking out all media and interwebs and cellphones, robbing us of another very interesting media spectacle

I wonder if the situation in egypt might have persuaded this guy towards harsher measures in dealing with this. I can almost hear him say " well that aint gonna happen to me, I'll make sure of it"
In effect the revolt in egypt is making Libians' movement bloodier than it would be otherwise.

Heard about this in the news yesterday. I think you need pretty big balls of steel to pretty much steal a fighter jet and fly to another country.
But it's totally insane what is happening there. Unbelievable how someone can order his military to shoot at his own people.

My faith in humanity won't be restored until we see a peaceful and solid progression to a new, honest government (as honest as governments go) through fair elections.
If a country plunges into chaos after a coup it's not good for anyone. Egypt seems fairly stable now, I'm not sure we can say the same about Libya in two weeks time.
If these countries all succeed and get a new government through democratic elections, then that should show the US/UK/Europe they can fuck right off out of the middle east with their promises of democracy. They've failed in both Afghanistan and Iraq which once again shows that if you want something done right, you gotta do it yourself.

On one hand it's great to see the citizens of these countries taking the initiative. But on the other hand, shit is getting unstable. I hope things don't spin out of control...

A Libian 'naval asset' is now floating just outside of Malta, it might defect.
And Gadaffi is now giving an absolutely outlandish speech full of peculiar historical references denouncing colonialism and foreign influence and reminding the people how much every African country sees Libya as moral leader. He's much upset, his face is a mask of hate. It might be the live translation, but it seems very much like he's rambling, jumping between trains of thought. Praising the 'brave angry youths' one moment and saying 'take your children off the streets before the constitution forces me to respond with violence' the next... kind of like an alcoholic wife beater apologizing and threatening his spouse at the same time.
I wonder where he is, the room in the background seems to be a derelict basement of some sort.

Not that the burden of proof lies with parties denying something that might indeed just be a rumour, but you got info saying otherwise?
