The "things you need to know" thread

I haven't see a similar type of topic so here, let's give it a go. You'll get the drift of this soon enough.

Titled "the things you need to know" and the idea is to add similar content or comment.
One day we'll no doubt look back and wonder on these strange and bizarre things.

Whether you need to know or not could be argued but methinks it has some merit for those awkward pauses in conversation at gatherings.
You may impress your company with what ubi (useless bits of information) you seem to have at hand; just don't tell them you got it from here :olo:

 There's no need for proof or links but add if you think your item needs support.

OK, here's one

If a statue in the park of a person on a horse has both front legs in the air, the person died in battle.
If the horse has one front leg in the air, the person died because of wounds received in battle.
If the horse has all four legs on the ground, the person died
of natural causes

and two for you, but debunked here?

Coca-Cola was originally green.

Edit; Smelling again :smirk:

1. Oxo cubes come in that foil package so that you can crumble it to dust in the package then rip off a corner and sprinkle out fresh stock.

People struggle to open it while still a cube, then mash it into lumps with their fingers.

2. You're much safer reversing into a parking spot, than reversing out. This is because you're reverse maneuver is occurring into a safe area, whereas reversing out of a spot you're backing into an 'unknown'. The accident reduction rate is supposedly something like 8x better.

Guessing a lot of people know both of these.

That Oxo tip is seriously one of the best things I've ever heard. I can also confirm it, because, like a fucking nerd, I just tested it and it works.

The north pole is 90° N; the south pole is 90° S. The 0° parallel of latitude is designated the equator

The Earth is not a sphere, but an irregular shape approximating a biaxial ellipsoid. It is nearly spherical, but has an equatorial bulge making the radius at the equator about 0.3% larger than the radius measured through the poles.

the ocean salt water is a huge untapped resource for uranium.

radon gas is a naturally occurring bi-product of decaying uranium and surrounds you every day.

fools gold "chalcopyrite" looks nothing like real gold in the rock.

Things like this are god sends when you've been doing it the wrong way because the person who taught you was doing it the wrong way.

I spent years annoyingly peeling garlic before someone told me to just squish the clove underneath the blade of a knife and voila, it peels in like 2 parts and 2 seconds.

Also touching stainless steel to get rid of the smell of garlic and onion.

I also peeled the cubes.

Steve Fry said this is not true - therefore it is not true!

Along the same line, can't tell you how long I diced onion the "wrong" way. It's so much quicker if you slice the top off, LEAVE THE ROOT END ON, peel, then place the onion flat side down on the cutting board and slice the root in half, lay half onion flat side down and slice. Pics Chop Onion

Knew the garlic one but ^^
Checks link (thanks)....
Well what do you know; something else discovered and quite useful. Looks a better way than my "wrong" way too Wabbit :dork:

Here's another but I can't vouch if at all correct..

Many years ago in Scotland , a new game was invented.
It was ruled 'Gentlemen Only...Ladies Forbidden'.. . and thus, the word GOLF entered into the English language.

Any golfers out there have any idea if correct?

You don't need to be a golfer. Snopes says it's false.

seriously, those acronyms that are alledgedly date from the middle ages should all die. anyone could see those are false, or as they say, backronyms.

acronyms like that are a product of the industrialization.

don't rush home to pop open that can of soda you just bought, thinking that simply adding icecubes will give you the same experience as a naturally cooled beverage. Apparently ice accelerates the release of carbonation especially in sodas that are warm.

For a good, expansive, (dutch) base cooking book try Kook ook. Lots of tips and ideas in it. You won't need another for ages unless you're going to go pro chef or something.
