Mouse going insane

I have this spare 98SE box running so I can play the original Doom2.exe instead of a lame source port on XP. This pc also is meant to run other games and dedicated servers in case a friend comes over to play or something.

I had a generic logitech mouse that was about three years old, and for a long time, it seemed to kind of freak out on me. Like, if you jerk it in a direction (for a flick rocket or rail for instance), it'd just kind of wiggle the crosshair a little instead of actually doing what I told it to.

Well, I got tired of it, so I went to Wal-Mart to buy a slightly better (and obviously brand new) mouse in hopes that it would fix my problem. I didn't need a hardcore gaming mouse -- just something that didn't totally suck. I ended up buying a Logitech "Click! Optical Mouse" and after plugging it in (USB -- my PS/2 port is burnt out... literally) and installing mouseware (the latest, I believe), I find myself having the same problem as I did before, only this time it's worse.

Sometimes, the mouse will barely move at all, like before, or even worse, the mouse will just go completely insane and start moving my character's view in circles, and keep going until I stop it, even though my hand isn't even on the mouse.

It's really frustrating that I just paid this amount of money ($20) and can't even use this thing for gaming.

Is there something I'm doing wrong, and is there a solution out there that will fix this problem? I really don't want to have to buy another freaking mouse.

What did you mean by "burnt out literally"?

One time I turned on the system, and it sparked. Doesn't work now.

Well, the PS2 is still a mouse input. You could be picking up signals from that fucked port and that's what's messing things about.

USB an option?

Yeah, I'm using USB, which I've already said. This thread isn't about my burned out PS/2 port.

Foo -- what do you suggest? Disabling PS/2 port somehow in the BIOS?

Update: Using mouse smoothing in the games that allow such a thing seems to improve the situation a little bit. It's not so easy to send the mouse into a vertigo tailspin.

So I'm thinking that increasing the hz of the mouse might fix the problem. However, I can't find a Hz changer for windows 98. I can only find one for XP and it can't be used on 98 due to 98 not having the file that this thing edits.

Can anyone help me out?

You might have luck in the BIOS, but generally if something that extreme has happened to your motherboard, I'd start pinning most problems on the motherboard being fucked, you know?

Yeah, I was thinking that.

I do want to at least try a Hz hack for the mouse. Just need to find a way to do it with 98SE. There is a GREAT tool I found for XP to do it with, but unfortunately.. yeah.

If it's USB, Hz hacks prolly won't do anything.

Besides, used to be that altering the hz was what caused fritzes like this. Default settings didn't.
