Vivendi to stop selling boxed copies of Valve games from 31 August

Half-Life developer Valve and publisher Vivendi Universal Games have finally settled their long-running dispute.

A federal court lawsuit was originally filed by Valve in the US in August 2002 but, in a brief statement, Valve has just confirmed that "the parties have resolved their differences and the settlement provides for the dismissal of all claims and counterclaims".

As part of the settlement agreement, Vivendi will cease distribution of retail packaged versions of Valve's games from 31 August, opening the way for Valve to sell its games exclusively via its Steam download service.

Games affected by the agreement include Half-Life, Half-Life 2, Counter-Strike, Counter-Strike Condition Zero and Counter-Strike Source.

Cybercafe operators that were licensed by Vivendi or Sierra Entertainment have also been notified that any licence agreement that may have granted rights to use Valve games in cybercafes is terminated.

W3rd, I downloaded the demo of HL2 but after reading the fineprint in the install, I cancelled the install.

Their efforts are worthy and noble, but their approach is pure shit IMO.

I've had zero problems with Steam. I think the nerds at Valve did something right here.

Until steam is configurable to allow you to select EXACTLY what you will, and will not, download, they can fuck off. I wanted the relatively small patch for Condition Zero (a game that is touted as a great SP out of the box), and I can't get it unless I take another 4 hours to download all the other MP fixes and maps n' shit they automatically package with the update.

If Steam is able to do this now, I welcome the correction. I gave up on it a couple of months ago after I updated HL2.

I won't buy another Valve game because even the boxed version requires you to use Steam, which is total crap.

In order to play the single player version of HL2 you have to log on to steam to play. What happens in 5 years when Steam no longer exists? Is my game total crap and I won't be able to play it?

Ummm,
Valve titles will remain in stores to buy post August 31st when their publishing agreement with Vivendi Universial Games is finally terminated, Doug Lombardi revealed to GamesIndustryBiz. This will no doubt come as a great relief to retailers who feared that Valve would move all its business to Steam, thereby costing them mucho moolah. It also means that the Steamophobes among you can continue to avoid the digital distribution application.

I'm not trying to get on the servers you colossal fucking knob. They should make that shit selectable so people can get what they need....I could give a fuck about playing HL2 or CZ online.

I don't actually mind steam when I used it with half life 1, I just disagree with having to pay for a game then being forced to use it to unlock the game.
