Rock icon Freddy Mercury died 20 years ago today. He was one of the most influential rock musicians to have ever graced this world. On November 23, 1991, he admitted publicly to suffering from AIDS, only a day before his death.

Incredible singer. He's one of the only deceased rock musicians that I think, "MAN I wish he were still around, what a shame," every time I hear his music.

nah, legends are made in this tragic way...he left it all behind, at a high note.

There are plenty of artists and groups who still sound just as good as they used to 30 years ago. Rush, Moody Blues, Depeche Mode, R.E.M., and Roger Waters just to name a few. What makes you so sure that Freddy wouldn't have maintained his awesomeness?

ah fuck me, I decided not to open that can of worms so i edited.
nah, legends are made in this tragic way. what do you think would become of him now, at 50-60 years old? possibly either out of the business after having done a few below self-set standard albums, probably sounding sub-par and artistically compromised by the pop virus.

but would you say, any of those bands have outdone their earlier work?

We were talking about consistency, not outdoing earlier work, but in answer to your question I would say R.E.M. and Depeche Mode have both done great work in their later years to rival or even succeed their earlier stuff.

The other examples aren't really comparable since they've made their bread and butter performing the same catalog for years—and with great success. Freddy Mercury could've easily done the same, but knowing his musical genius and talent, we would simply have more brilliant music to enjoy today had he not died so soon.

Speaking of legends...I just saw Judas Priest at the Bell Centre in Montreal. Awesome fucking show.

To celebrate the end of an era, it's time for the gas mask. :)
Which in hindsight is fitting because the first time anyone asked me if I wanted to buy some pot was at a Judas Priest concert...when I was 12.

The thing with Queen is all the mainstream media regurgitates is what's on that endless stream of "greatest hits" albums. Songs like Bohemian Rhapsody, We Will Rock You, We Are The Champions, I Want To Break Free and Bicycle Race.
These, IMO, aren't Queens best songs.

Try songs like '39, The Prophet's Song, The three-piece Tenement Funster/Flick of the Wrist/Lily of the Valley or some of the stuff on their first two albums. That's the best stuff you'll get out of Queen IMO.

Haha, i knew i'd get shit for posting that :olo: I'll inject some more hatred into the discussion, just for lols:

Look, if their greatest hits that i've positively loathed ever since the first time i've been exposed to them are 'not their best' i'm not even gonna give their earlier work a chance. After all how much less awful than that can they really be? Not much, i'm sure. I know what i like and i know what i don't like, and i have always hated the sound of Queen. In fact, Queen and their campy glampop awfulness can piss right off, any influence they had on popmusic i'd gladly live without because guess what, i think popmusic is fucking shit 99% of the time.

Also, Tsakali is correct, he died right when he was just over the very top of his career. There's a bit of a problem with saying their best work was their earliest work and at the same time claiming that if he'd been around for longer we'd have gotten more brilliant music. Chances of that are very slim indeed - if he was alive today i bet his career would have taken a nosedive about 19 years ago and there's a real possibility he'd get as much respect as Matellica gets these days. It's almost impossible to be consistently brilliant, there's not a single artist or band (or even creatives outside the music industry) i can name who has succeeded in that. Creative brilliance seems to be a quality most often found in young people that simply evaporates after a few years, leaving behind an ever shrinking horde of dissapointed fans.

tl;dr, you're all a bunch of sentimental homos.
