Anyone here into RC Cars? I had a tiny one as a kid as it was probably one of my favourite toys. I've been thinking about getting a proper one now, would mainly be using it in mild off-road conditions [grass, hills, dirt and such]. I'm pretty sure I want electric rather than gasoline powered.

Did a bit of research earlier, and liked the 1/16 brushed Traxxas E-Revo.

This next one is brushless [I think that means it's more efficient] and probably not stock, but looks damn impressive: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RMMlJuXPSzE

65 mph is insane and I'd probably be happy with less than half that. When it comes to size, I think 1/16 scale is a good spot. The main things I'd be looking for would be overall reliability [without having to tinker much with it {or is that a pipe dream?}] and decent charge retention/recharge time.

Would be cool if anyone had any experience or suggestions. Which forums or resources do you use?

I had this when I was a kid, it was the absolute shit:

RC's are really cool toys. I never had the money nor the availability when and where I was growing up to really get into it, and by the time I moved here and found out about hobby shops and had money in my pocket I felt like I was too old to bother getting into stuff like that. RC planes sounds like something more challenging and interesting at my age, but the lack of perspective (controlling a 3 axis situation from a stationary position on the ground) kinda trumps the experience.

grew up obsessed with these. http://www.mini-4wd.de/racing.html was cool testing out batteries for maximum power bursts (dodgy charges etc) and all the parts you could buy to upgrade the basic kits. light weight drive shafts, engine upgrades, extra stabilizers, light weight shells, gold plated connecters etc etc etc. like being a little engineer. hah

I got one of the smaller ones (infrared) for buzzing around the office just above co-worker's heads and I've got a bigger one (radio) for flying outside.

have bought a lot of RC toys for robotics projects (so i now have 2 functioning robot bases and a boxful of broken toys that probably cost 3 times as much as just buying a robot base) - would repeat mr pink's advice of enjoying them but not getting too attached. the one you've linked to looks great, especially the idea of bits of it being waterproof.

is it you that's into stuff like fixing/modding cars? if you don't mind a bit of electronics as well then it might be worth having a look at what you can do with FPV setups - they've gotten a lot easier/cheaper in the last couple of years, e.g.

I did own a nice RC Leopard tank once. Played it for hours clambering over mounds of lego bricks (battle rubble).

I never got into helicopters at all but planes, yep would like to one day (adds to bucket list).

It was really good quality actually for the price, had a range/altitude of up to about 400 metres (not that I ever really got to test that) & variable speed, solidly built etc, it was a good starter plane I guess. also had these little attachments you could buy, 1 being a laser gun which when fired on another would cut off it's engine for 10 seconds & send it spiralling out of control unfortunately I had no friends to play with thinking about it I'm sure you can get more for your buck 5 years down the line, might have a look around to pick another one up this summer

pretty sure they were a taicho or tyco or taiyo 'nitro dozer' and a 'turbo trax'. the 'turbo trax' has the ability to switch the tracks between the normal profile and a square profile (where the front axle and one of the extra two wheels form the top half of the square). on the 'nitro dozer', the setup is almost exactly the same, but there are plastic lugs holding the track mounts in place in the regular profile and there's no little arm poking out of the motor casing to control the switch action.

if you can find one from that useless and possibly wrong description, try and get the one where the track mounts are fixed (i.e. one that isn't advertised with the flipping/switching action) because the special feature is bloody useless - all it does is create an extra flailing action when the toy smashes into your ankle/shin/cat/sleeping girlfriend's boob.

Yep. They're also charged up so they're flyable right out of the box (you still need 6 AA batteries for the controller) but it's ready to go as soon as you buy it. The smaller one cost me $60 and the bigger one cost $250, so they're pretty affordable.

And they're so easy to fly I bought my parents (old people) one each and they were buzzing them around their house almost right away.
