Yes. Oh, yes he is.

http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2012/06 ... led-clang/

It seems the man is fascinated by swordfighting and wants to create a game that does this well, called CLANG. I urge you to watch the vids, pretty funny stuff.

But does he really look like that i wonder, or is it for the benefit of the vid? What a strange man <3

Any swordfighting game project that ignores Bushido Blade 2 and doesn't even go in the direction that was is retarded. (BB2 had no enegy bars, instant deaths...)

Not only that, but all the game footage they showed was of rubbishly modeled charcters, with movement so bad it looked like they didn't even use the motion capture that they showed them doing.

Did you pay any attention to what Mr Stephenson has been saying?

Oh my God.
It's full of stupid.

Funny movie aside, i wonder what direction this is going... a mouse and a keyboard is not at all like shooting a gun either, but the FPS genre has that down to the point where if done properly it can feel like an incredibly realistic mechanic to a player. Not at all sure i want to stand in front of my gaming unit and muck around with a plastic sword thing for realism's sake... also because i'm not convinced it would really feel more realistic - there's no force feedback from smashing swords together, how will they manage things like feetwork involved in swashbucklery, etc etc.

Hmmz. Still, Neal fucking Stephenson.

Well he said in the video they're starting off with a simple peripheral and possibly expand from there. He also showed that collection of prototype swords, some of which already had some electronics integrated. Thirdly, he mentioned it being like Guitar Hero with swords. So I think you can put some good money on him using an external peripheral.

I wonder how it'll work out though. What can this peripheral offer that Kinect, Sony's wand or Nintendo's Wiimote Plus can't? I'm skeptical. Sure, he may develop a game where you'll level up Call-of-Duty-style to unlock different types of swords and different ways to balance them or something (dunno, I'm not a swords expert) but I'm not sure if the sword play itself will work out all that well.

The thing is, when people think of swordplay, they think of making 1-on-1 movements where the sword reacts exactly like you move it (the controller or your hands) in real life. But so far, every motion controlled game implements a set of gestures that are linked to in-game actions. It has never been about mapping movements 1-on-1 to the screen. There's always an abstraction layer in-between. Maybe some of the newer Kinect games do this differently, but I have yet to see a game doing this.

Pretty sure this has been gone over by some game developers, but I'm not in the "google for references" mood today.

Basically, 1-to-1 sounds great on paper -- until you realize that in order to feel like a expert swordsman in the game, you have to be able to control your body and muscles at the level of an expert swordsman in real life. People generally don't like seeing a 1-to-1 mapping of how clumsy they are projected onto the screen.

The Wiimote Plus is pretty capable of doing 1-to-1 mapping, it's just not something that's really fun.

A similar style of game, the guy who made X-Plane once released a proof of concept game called Space Combat (taken down now) that was realistic space combat. It was only fun to simulation geeks, not something you could actually build an appealing game off of, because real life isn't terribly fun.

Just looked it up in the dictionary. Looks like both are correct.
Which, I know, still makes my correction attempt incorrect, but whatever. Sue me.
