Facebook's photo-sharing site Instagram has updated its privacy policy giving it the right to sell users' photos to advertisers without notification.

Unless users delete their Instagram accounts by a deadline of 16 January, they cannot opt out.

The changes also mean Instagram can share information about its users with Facebook, its parent company, as well as other affiliates and advertisers.

I'm not an instagram user, I'm actually very uninterested in photographs of food and people's children smeared with a false sense of nostalgia but it's quite a big and smart move for Zuckerberg, basically they're moving into the stock photo market and they'll have access to a continually updated archive of tagged and organised stock images by a clients that don't even need paying. I wonder if they'll give people shares in images that are used often, like YouTube and their monetary rewards from advertising in order to encourage people to keep using the app, in fact it might entice more people to use it.

I like the Reginald Braithwaite quote:
You are not our customers, you are the cattle we drive to market and auction off to the highest bidder. Enjoy your feed and keep producing the milk.

Well, I'm not sure if you guys have never used it or don't understand, but you're not forced to look at the "food and children" photos. There are some legitimate photographers, people that live in interesting places, and people that have the same interests as you that have great photos. You can follow these people and you don't even have to bother with the rest of the "hipsters"...

I use tumblr for that kind of thing. It's far more mature.

But why would I be interested in photographers who use a mobile phone to take pictures and apply cheap filters to said photos instead of photographers who use real professional photocameras?

A lot of times it's not about the hardware or the professional status of the photographer, but more about the people, place, subject matter, and spontaneity of a photo...
