This UN vote on the Palestinian issue

The United Nations general assembly voted overwhelmingly on Thursday to recognise Palestine as a state, in the face of opposition from Israel and the US.
The 193-member assembly voted 138 in favour of the plan, with only nine against and 41 abstentions. The scale of the defeat represented a strong and public repudiation for Israel and the US, who find themselves out of step with the rest of the world.

Good stuff, first time in many years i've been ever so slightly optimistic about news coming from that area

There's not much the US and Israel can do about it either, there's the whole freezing of assets thing but a bunch of other states has already pledged to pick up any bills. Also, lol at the UK insisting they needed Palestinian assurances not to go to the ICC in return for a yes vote, how fucking cynical is that? It's also about the first time ever the dutchee government doesn't vote in lock step with the US on this issue, going for abstain rather than no. And shame on Canada too, what's wrong with you cunts?
This Abbas guy ain't half bad though, this diplomacy-whilst-ignoring-the-parties-who-keep-blocking-everything tactic of his is actually getting results.

How naive of the US. Israel and the Palestines are never going to achieve peace if they have to settle it by themselves.

The Harper government is a fucking lump of steaming shit smothering Canada's reputation on everything from multiculturalism and environmental pollution to simple things like not being a dick in discussing world affairs.
From every indication Canada is fed up with them because they do not represent Canadian values.
That's all I can say really because just Wednesday Harper claimed to speak for all Canadians when he said he'd vote against Palestine. When I read that I wanted to throw something at my screen because he clearly does not.

I mean seriously...just LOOK at this fucking idiot:
Canada Votes No At UN, Threatens Retaliation
Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird used the podium at the United Nations General Assembly to denounce the world body Thursday for its "utterly regrettable decision" to allow a historic vote on Palestinian statehood.
Baird also suggested Canada will take retaliatory measures against the Palestinians for forcing the statehood issue onto the world stage.
The minister didn't say what Canada was contemplating, but the obvious option would appear to be suspending aid spending to the Palestinians.
Retaliation? Jesus christ.
If it's mean and stupid these right wing morons are all for it.

Half of the country didn't even go to the polls. Enough of the people that did go voted for him. I remember reading somewhere that, of the total population, he represents less than 40% of us. Sickening. The guy is a criminal.

If you're wondering how Canada could have voted in these morons, it looks like we didn't. In somewhat related news, looks like the Conservatives may have
stolen the vote. What started off as an "isolated" incident of illegally placed misleading calls to voters directing them to the wrong voting stations in Guelph, the investigation is unraveling a greater conspiracy across 56 ridings out of a total of 308 across multiple provinces.

In a statement released Friday morning, Baird said, "Yesterday’s unilateral action does nothing to further the Middle East peace process. It will not change the reality on the streets of the West Bank or Gaza. This unilateral step is an impediment to peace.

So the conservatives recognize an Israeli state but not a Palestinian one, yet they expect this imbalance to magically lead to peace? I don't think Baird has any idea what goes on in the streets of the West Bank and he should shut his trap.

funny how opponents of the UN move are claiming that it's a terrible mistake while simultaneously claiming that it changes nothing
no doubt the israelis will now 'punish' the palestinians for their 'disobedience'. uh, i mean punish them harder than they already are

Yeah, a national pride
I'm actually curious to see what their new offering will be like. I remember having a blackberry back in the day. It was an alright piece of kit and I enjoyed the depth of the settings. But they just crapped out too often. I went through three of them in just over a year before I finally decided "Fuck RIM." Also the browser was hilariously shit.

How the hell did this go from a UN vote to cellphones?
Back on topic... (sort of) I'm reading this book (
The Watchman's Rattle) now that has an interesting view of the whole she-bang going down in the Middle East. Basically the author posits that the West is essentially trying to ram what she calls an "extreme economic supermeme" (Capitalism, etc.) down the throats of the Middle East, who are subjects of an extreme religious supermeme. The West is fighting to keep its supermeme alive, and the Middle East is doing the same. The fact that the East is willing to commit suicide to keep its supermeme alive is a testament to their (supermeme's) power. It's funny, because she describes supermemes earlier in the book as more or less wide scale bullshit.
Anyway I realize this is common knowledge but I just found it interesting to view it from that angle, because when you do, it's essentially no different than us trying to go over there and force them all into Christianity, Flying Spaghetti Monsterism or whatever the fuck. It's just two really ugly heads smashing against each other over and over again.

Yeah...sounds about right.
