The bits of the video on the The Guardian site where you can hear the impacts are kind of harrowing. It's like a precursor to the end of the world in a movie starring Bruce Willis.

edit:
oic, it's not an impact we're hearing but a sonic boom.

Sounds like multiple booms to me though.

No. The general consensus seems to be that the two events are not even related to each other, just a big bunch of coincidence.

Apparently some bits hit the ground. This hole is supposedly the result of a 0.5 - 1cm piece of debris hitting the ice:

Got that from a Russian site (that's a Google Translate link)

Impressive stuff.

Russian scientists immediately jumped on this to complain about recent lack of funding.
Makes me wonder what could have been done about this.
Like, if they had been funded more roebels, they could have seen it coming and nuke it out of the sky?

I think they're reasoning along lines like this, but elsewhere I've also read that it's very hard to discover and track objects as fast and small as this. Hitting them with a missile is even harder.

Exactly.
If shit's gonna smash, it's gonna smash. Like God intended.
I liek.

It's amazing how bright that thing is, you can visibly see the angle of shadows change as it flies by.

From the Deep Thoughts twitter feed:
The big, huge meteor headed toward the Earth. Could nothing stop it? Maybe Bob could.
He was suddenly on top of the meteor -- through some kind of space warp or something. "Go, Bob, go!" yelled one of the generals.
"Give me that!" said the big guy general as he took the microphone away.
"Listen, Bob," he said. "You've got to steer that meteor away from the Earth." "Yes, but how?" thought Bob. Then he got an idea.
Right next to him there was a steering wheel sticking out of the meteor.
