What are the blue tennis ball things on the side, Tsakali? Are they for balance or are they some kind of bumper so it doesn't smash into things?

yeah, training gear so i don't smash the blades in the ground while getting the feel of it. only helps when taking off, landing, and not so much with unplanned interactions with the floor.

the thing came as just a bag of parts... bought, the gyro, all the electronics etc. separately... it's kinda like building a custom box instead of buying a shitty Dell.

thanks for reminding me to play the realflight simulator more... was meaning to get good enough at flying heli's in the game so i could fly a real one and not crash every time

Pretty sweet moves of them helicopter dudes there. The RC plane would've been fucked if they weren't around.

I love that shit, because you have a veteran pilot giving a sweet experience to a newbie pilot, all the while just being a cool dude with skills flying. That pilot is the kind of guy I want to meet.

Any tips for a friend interested in helicopters? He got a starter one a bit better than the Radioshack/sharper image shit you see. It was cool and he could hover it well, but a crash broke it pretty quick.


Then he was excited to tell me about another copter he ordered, nicer and a bit bigger than the last one. Two motors movie two blades opposite directions so the tail control was less important. It sounded bad ass. He got it in the mail at some point, by the time I hung at his house a day later it was already busted. I hear this is the norm for RC helicopters. I'd love to be able to fly one like a champ but I'm not that rich, maybe I'll be able to see my buddy do it if he stops wrecking them.

I'm in love with riding a motorcycle every time I do it, but I do lust for the feel of flying. I dunno about learning to fly small aircraft...I just remember staring into the Grand Canyon and being so fucking jealous of the birds that were just swooping thro the landscape.

I sold my esky belt cp carbon epic pro mega. not the kind of thing you want knocking around the house with kids.

Actually an R22 is the small, two-seat heli they were flying. They go for around $300,000.

i would soooooo love military helicopter training oh man that would be wicked aces!

judging from the home and the yard there were flying the rc plane around I would imagine they wouldn't have been too upset over losing an $800 plane

EtUL, I'm kind of a noob myself but it depends on what you want out of it. Do you like the idea of an easy little flyer around the house that you can pick up immediately, or something a little more satisfying in the challenge/ability category? I can't help you with the first option, since I went for the more challenging route and got a little 4 channel v911.

It's cheap and a solid flyer, perfect for a noob to get used to the feel of flying a proper helicopter, and teaches you proper controller habits so you'll be ready to go into something more serious without much of a shocker. You can smash it against a wall at full speed with a 9/10 ratio of completely nothing happening to it. It is super popular among hobbyists, who own much bigger birds. If you manage to smash, it you can either choose to buy parts and repai it, or simply buy another one without the controller for $20. It's more satisfying to fly than the simple 3 channel floater you can buy locally, which kinda sounds like what your friend has. If I'm not mistaken all those double blade helis handle like one handles in a call of duty game. Very restricted maneuverability, but simple to fly.

There is also the option of gettign an RC heli simulator (phoenixRC, Real Flight etc), which will really help you to get used to the feel of controlling something like that.

Once you wall-smash your way to instinctively flying the v911 without having to think you'll be ready for an entree level - hobby grade - 6 channel bird like the one I have now. I say skip all the "ready to fly" cheaply made alternatives out there. But you need to keep in mind that repairs on this level are part of the game. But no big deal, if you buy the right heli (and I believe mine is a very smart buy) you'll have access to cheap and abundant parts. You'll already know how to fix it, cause you would have to actually build it yourself from the start, and in the process of lock threading and greasing/lubing everything you'll become familiar with the inner workings of everything involved... and it can look daunting at first because there's so much there.....Theory, mechanics, parts, motor types gear types/gear ratios, esc controllers, gyro system setup, flybarless systems, servo speed/quality, blade weight balancing, degree pitch settings. Receiver/transmitter/controller nuances Throttle curves, Pitch curves, exponential controller input settings, battery/charger types, heading hold vs rate mode flying setup... scale, sport or 3D flying styles...ffs I can just keep typing.

It can be great but if you're not planning on building, soldering, reading up and spending money, you're prolly better off not even getting into it.

If I remember correctly you live out in the country... so you already have one of the most important ingredients.... space to fly it in.
