EU outlawing porn?

The European Union is voting on a proposal next week that could lead to a blanket ban on porn in member states, and it seems the measure may well be approved. The proposal, called 'Eliminating gender stereotypes in the EU,' mentions issues such as women carrying a 'disproportionate share of the burden' when raising a family, violence against women as 'an infringement of human rights,' and gender stereotypes that develop early in life. From the proposal: "Calls on the EU and its Member States to take concrete action on its resolution of 16 September 1997 on discrimination against women in advertising, which called for a ban on all forms of pornography in the media and on the advertising of sex tourism."

Oh and this is a juicy bit at the end of the article as well:
Christian Engström, a Swedish Member of European Parliament representing the Pirate Party, claimed on his blog Thursday that those trying to reach MEPs to voice their opinions are being silenced.
Engström received around 350 emails on the subject by noon, but those messages dried up around lunchtime. He discovered that the European Parliament's IT department is "blocking the delivery of the emails on this issue, after some members of the parliament complained about getting emails from citizens."
So much for having your voice heard. I'm really starting to doubt if we're still living in a democracy. Elections are just another political sham.

But that's not really using porn in conventional advertising. It's basically just porn, or rather, nude girls trying to tempt you into calling sex lines.

The whole "exploitation" thing is rubbish. Are they doing it against their will? Are they being forced? I doubt it. I bet they need money and are doing it for that reason, but they could quite easily work 2 jobs as a cleaner but thats hard work and probably beneath them. Why work 2 jobs when you can get your baps out and talk dirty on the phone for a few a hours a night for better money? Nobody is forcing them, it’s a “lifestyle” choice

In the context of Don's question, there is a difference. I assume he meant using pornography in conventional advertising for non-porn related products.

Yeah I don't think it's about the women playing in porn movies, but the porn flicks portraying women as objects of lust and desire. Something like that. Not sure why that's such a big issue it requires legislation. It's not like porn movies pretend to be a shining beacon of sexual equality or a truthful reflection of real life.

Well exactly. In fact, thats what porn flicks are all about.
They wouldn't ban action movies for being to exciting and over the top; it is what its about. Escapism.

libertarian view: the state trying to ban porn is a serious infringement of individual freedom
conservative view #1: the state should ban porn because everything sexual is sinful
conservative view #2: the state's attempts to usurp the role of parents in protecting their kids from porn is an indirect attack on the family
liberal view #1: porn should be banned because it degrades women
liberal view #2: porn shouldn't be banned because without porn men will have nothing to wank to, which could lead to sexual health problems and possibly an increase in rape
Taliban view: see conservative #1 and liberal #1

I'm the same way...although I have a television and cable for live sports only. I also have a PVR that I never use because - shock! - I just download the show in 2 minutes and, through the magic of HDMI, I still can watch on the telly but with no commercials.
Is there a DVR that doesn't record commercials? I doubt it.

Same thing in Germany as well. After midnight every single channel turns into a multi-hour infomercial for phone sex lines...with "interludes" of women stripping and then back to the infomercial.
God I miss Europe.
