not trolling at all. This monitor is absolutely stunning. Yes it's heavy as fuck (close to 100lb), and takes up a lot of space and generates heat. Plus it takes half an hour or so to fully warm up.

But it is arguably the finest CRT ever created. It's 24 inch and widescreen (aspect ratio 16:10), and represents the most advanced iteration of the trinitron line. The GDM F520 is also brilliant, but that's a 4:3 21 inch display.

thx whiskey - there's a guy selling them on ebay for $1000 + shipping, but those are professionally calibrated and in grade A+ condition. They usually go for a few hundred bux - I got real lucky.

tomorrow I'm gonna do a side by side comparison of this screen with my housemate's macbook retina display. Not really a fair matchup considering the size difference, but might be interesting.

I showed him some 1080p footage last night on this beast and he was in awe. I'm running windows in 1900x1200@ 85hz (this thing does up to like 170hz in lower resolutions) and the text is perfect. Quakelive in widescreen @ 120hz is a dream

I've got a similar one, received it for free. it was pretty nice but not as nice as my ultra sharp so... i'm getting another ultrasharp when i get home (but bigger)

which crt was it, and what did you like better about the ultrasharp?

Jules, no offense, but that monitor is a bit outdated. Maybe you haven't seen them in your country (not sure where you are), but they have made tremendous advancements in the technology over the past few years. If you're on a budget, and clearly you are, you may want to check out something like this:

couple things:

are you aware that a high end CRT is actually superior in almost every way to even a solid IPS panel? The high contrast ratio allows excellent black levels. The high refresh rates and virtually zero input lag are ideal for watching moving images and gaming. The color fidelity is also phenomenal. Not to mention that CRTs don't have a native resolution so they support true multisyncing. One thing LCDs have going for them is that they have perfect geometry, and anything less than a well calibrated CRT will show mild distortions. To put things in perspective, the lab I work at recently purchased a $16,000 dollar lcd monitor that approaches what a CRT can do when it comes to timing. And the viewing angle of it sucks.

CRT technology is arguably more advanced than LCDs. If an alien species were observing us, I'd estimate they'd think CRT technology is cooler. When you think about how it actually works, it's fucking mind blowing.

You should be aware that almost all "LED" monitors aren't in fact LED monitors. They're still LCDs, they just use LED backlighting, not for the actual pixels themself. This monitor is no exception.

Either way, you're still losing quality over lots of CRT monitors in exchange for other benefits. LED backlit monitors are a step beyond why people switched to LCDs in the first place. They're even thinner and use even less power. Nobody ever switched to LCDs for a better picture, and LED monitors, backlit or not, are no exception.

I remember first hearing about OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode) monitors about a decade ago. Ones that actually emit light from the pixels themself. It sounded amazing, but it seems like they'll never arrive. Last one I saw was 7" and was like $10,000.

I think very very high end video equipment, in professional settings like TV studios still rely wholly on CRT displays. It's sad that this LCD technology that has completely replaced CRTs at the consumer level is actually inferior in terms of image quality.

Actually Sony have made a couple of OLED monitors for professional use. One 25", one 17". No-one makes CRTs any more.

Looks like you're right. I couldn't find any current professional CRTs. As for the Sony OLEDs, prices range from $2,495 for a 7" to $26,000 for a 24.5". What a deal!
