A Kentucky mother stepped outside of her home just for a few minutes, but it was long enough for her 5-year-old son to accidentally shoot and kill his 2-year-old sister with the .22-caliber rifle he got for his birthday, state officials said.

The Crickett website features three .22-caliber rifle models for kids, with shoulder stock colors ranging from pink to red, white and blue swirls. "My first rifle" is the company's slogan.

"It's just one of those nightmares," he said, "a quick thing that happens when you turn your back."
Jeez. There's a difference between "turning your back" and giving a 5 year old a firearm

"My first rifle" is the company's slogan
"my first fatal shooting" is the title of the five year old's future AMA on reddit in 20 years
i don't think introducing kids to firearms is the bad parenting here; it's the part where the mother forgot this should only happen under strict supervision

Are the parents being charged with criminal negligence or something? Or is the general opinion that leaving a loaded weapon in a corner with small children is totally okay behaviour, that this was some kind of freak accident that was unavoidable?

Having read the article more closely it seems i can answer my own question; it was ruled an accident and mom says:
It was God's will. It was her time to go, I guess. I just know she's in heaven right now and I know she's in good hands with the Lord.
Yeah, legality of the firearm aside, if that happened over here and mom had the same attitude, i'm pretty sure the remaining kid would instantly be whisked to a fosterhome. Jesus fucking retarded religious gun nuts and their enablers

We don't arrest people for being stupid. I'll save you the time and just say myself that most people would be in prison if that was the case.
lol, y'all are a broken record every time something like this is posted. Asking the same questions and making the same statements over and over. News flash: we haven't changed, and probably won't change for quite some time. You guys acting surprised is about as dumb as an accidental shooting...

The thing is, borders are being stretched. We're over the fact that once in a while, some nutjob will shoot up his co-workers or classmates or something, but now we're talking about a 5 year old shooting his 2 year old sister and it being shrugged of as "oh yeah, shit happens". The thought of giving a firearm to a 5 year old to, and I quote:
play with is completely alien to most of us here on this forum (I guess even to most US residents on here). That's such a sharp contrast to the response all people mentioned in the article seem to have, like it's completely normal and it was just an accident that couldn't have been prevented.

You seriously think it's not a bad idea to give a 5 year old his own loaded firearm? Seriously?

You usually do when it costs someone their life my friend. I was going to say it's called third degree manslaughter but i googled it and hey, i'm no lawyer but i think this shit is possibly even second degree manslaughter.

It's "totally ok behavior" and "unavoidable" only with stupid people.
To wit:

A complete lack of responsibility, introspection and a shrug...I hope that woman has more kids because those guns won't shoot all by themselves.
