There's some serious protest fatigue setting in.
Both in myself and apparently the media. Coverage has been remarkably tepid about the shit going down.
I do think the situation demands more attention.

Prime minister Erdogan is in the process of pushing traditionally secular Turkey towards theocracy, and a large part of the Turkish population very much opposes this process.
Although Erdogan is a democratically chosen head of state, he now shows himself to be a authoritarian, ridiculing and marginalizing protesters, and using any means necessary to stifle them.

Turkey is an interesting country, almost schizophrenic in the way it's torn between the eastern and the western world.
Curious to see how this develops, also seeing Turkey's aspirations to become part of the european union.

if Turkey joined the EU, the EU would have a border with Syria, Iraq and Iran

a Turk warned me that Erdogan was on this path years ago. joke is, this wasn't some sort of populist uprising or occupy Istanbul St. it was a bunch of people protesting a park getting replaced by a mall... and then the cops came in with tear gas and clubs.

also, i thought turkey joining the EU was off the table. their economy is better than greece, but not enough so to get people excited. and no way germany would let that happen because all of turkey would immediately relocate to Berlin.

lol, Turkey is just a buffer zone for the inevitable war against Iran.

The park was a last symbol of the secular government that made Turkey what it was. They bristled over the feeling of the country becoming islamicized and the destruction of the park was just the straw that broke the camel's back.

I learned a bit more about Turkey today.

That's one hell of an emu.
