I guess he's a big name in id's history but the impact of this will probably be nil.

His job was pretty much obsolete since id Software joined Zenimax.

id has allowed themselves to become irrelevant

I dunno, are any companies "relevant" in this industry? I think gone are the days when you had a few big name studios pushing out the top titles and now every company is more or less facing equal challenges.

Is Epic still pushing out titles? They haven't published any major games for a while and seem more intent on making money licensing their engines. Valve makes one good game every decade or so, but that's because they can afford to sit around without worrying about funding since they're sitting on the Steam cash cow. Most studios these days are content to publish a few IPs and be happy that they can still barely pay the bills. The publishers are the ones pimping all the cash.

The gaming industry is facing similar challenges to the VFX industry. There was that company that did the effects for Life of Pi and ended up winning the Academy Award for best effects... but not before they went bankrupt after the movie was released. Hollywood VFX artists protested in front of the Academy Awards since they're facing an industry where the movie studios get all the money and the VFX studios can barely pay the artists under their employ and end up making zero profit.

As far as id Software goes, I think they're fantastic on talent, but having problems with lack of management. Carmack is still the graphics genius in the industry but he refuses to take any real leadership roles in the company and instead insists on being just the engineer. I doubt Todd really did a whole lot of stuff concerning day to day management. I think that leaves Tim Willits, who is really just some level designer they picked up as a guy who modded for the original Doom. I think he's a little out of touch with the current game industry and I don't think he's much suited for creative director. Anyway, that's my impression from my chair with telescopes looking into the id Software offices, who knows what's actually going on in there, maybe Grace Kelly can go take a peek.

Didn't Epic recently release GoW Judgement with People Can Fly?

So, People Can Fly created that GoW Judgment, not Epic ... And for me, People Can Fly did only one great game, Painkiller, the following were just normal publisher requests ...

Epic not releasing games? How about Gears of War, Gears of War 2, Gears of War 3, Unreal Tournament 3, Infinity Blade and Infinity Blade II.
And they were also involved with Gears of War Judgment, Shadow Complex and Bulletstorm.

All id Software have released this generation is Rage.

Can you really blame them? As fans we always want more, but the old game dev superstars made some serious bank and have lived the life already.

I think what made id so amazing originally was that their small team was overwhelmingly loaded with talent. As the industry went to enterprise level organizations, their talent was surpassed by brute force and I think they came to that realization far too late.

I should have said, "good games". But anyway, my point is that Epic and Valve have found other more lucrative businesses, because it seems as if companies who do "just games" face challenges from lack of funding, pressure from publishers and other stresses that places them in trouble. There are too many talented studios out there that have folded, and there are a number of new studios founded by the former members of older studios who are probably back in for the same cycle.

I think id Software should go back into the engine licensing business as they did with id Tech 3. There's potential there, id Tech 5 does look and feel like a fantastic engine with some impressive capabilities even if id Software left them pretty much untapped. With a few tweaks to the engine and some work on the developer tools, they could give UE, CryEngine, etc. a run for their money.

LOL. That's pretty lame if that's all the dirt you can dig up on a guy and bother putting it up on a website. Our mayor is a fat drunk on crack who has a history of making racist, homophobic and stupid remarks, yet I don't think he has a website targeting him.

Just counting good games are we? I guess that leaves id Software's game count at 0 then :p
