Onlookers, chanting "Allahu Akbar" ("God is Great"), can be seen in the footage photographing and capturing the horrific scene.

The statement from the Vatican said that the group had the backing of al-Qaida.

Fr Pierbattista Pizzaballa told the news agency that the monastery of St Anthony, which was "the only safe area" for Fr Murad and several other Christians, was attacked when Fr Murad tried to resist the militants.
Monk Francois Murad was beheaded with a kitchen knife. He'd been in captivity for a few months. Of course they filmed it, and if you're a total fucking scumbag then I'm sure you've already watched it. I really don't understand how the fuck the US government can directly support these terrorists while having a "war against terror".

Sick bastards :!: :disgust:

See the big red button there on the desk?
Go on, push it and nuke the site of the slaying and vaporize the area for many miles.

I would.

Sorry to get violent. I don't see this side of me often.
This senseless & barbaric act is abhorrent to not only Mankind but surely any God.

Seriously, you're upset because of one beheading? Is it because he was a christian? Wtf?

You should be against arming the rebels because they've shown their extremist colours since month 2 of the civil war - not because they beheaded a priest. Shit, they've been beheading and torturing Shiites since the start, but i guess that doesn't count.

As to your question why the US (and the EU as of a month ago) are arming the rebels, it's simple really: the Syrian civil war is a seismic shift of power in the region and it's not going well for the rebels lately, ever since Hezbollah stepped in. Syria is of course allied with Iran, which is allied with Hezbollah, all enemies of Israel. Russia as a rule sells weapons to all nations and groups the US doesn’t sell weapons to, so it’s become like one of those Cold War proxy wars, only with a confusing amount of players.

The Syrian civil war is the most dangerous developement in the middle east in decades and the smart thing would be to back Assad to restore the status quo. If this drags on - and there's every indication that it will since neither side can defeat the other – there’s a good chance we might see a wider regional conflict.

I've been against the rebels since the first suicide bombings and attacks against civilians. After that it became more and more clear that the Shiite, Alawite, Druze, Christians, (any non Sunni, really) were going to be slaughtered and oppressed on a wide scale if the government fell. I'm just posting this because some people are still supporting them.

It's always been a total mystery to me that the US has historically supported Sunni rulers. Sunni extremists are far more aggressive, violent, and oppressive than their Shiite counterparts. The Shiites have been oppressed and discriminated against for hundreds of years so perhaps they have lesser ambition or a better understanding of what it feels like to be a religious minority.

Same. The cynic in me says that's exactly why, but it just seems so evil and dumb.

because stupidity

the US government has made some pisspoor tactical decisions during the last 12 years, most notably in Somalia. now they see toppling Syria as a way of weakening Iran and Hezbollah at the same time, even if that multiplies the number of terrorists. who knows, maybe that's the plan? help al-Qa'eda, help the warfare state [/tinfoil]

not ok, but not nearly as incendiary as a video of him being beheaded while guys stand around shouting "allahu akbar." context is important for both the murder and its (dishonest) publicity.
