Yea that was my first thought as well.

Must say it's got a really nice small form factor, but the shape of it doesn't seem too practical.

I think what is awesome about it is the computing power that comes with this small size. Can bring it to the office/university/family/friends without problems.

My initial thought was R2D2. 9.9" tall, 6.6" diameter, that's tiny. As far as shape goes, it's probably quite good for cooling since the center is a giant triangular heatsink for CPU and dual GPUs, forming a small wind tunnel. Support for x3 4K displays!

Only downside is most professionals will have to spend a fair bit on extra accessories for Thunderbolt cables (not cheap), hard drive racks and other peripherals. I think its success depends heavily on what Apple will be charging for this "Built in USA" hardware as people are forced to rely on external expansion.

I like the look of thing, but given where Apple appear to be going with OS X, I'm not sure it'll gain much of a foothold in the video / film industry.

Final Cut X is pretty much the laughing stock of the industry at the moment, having earned the nickname "iMovie Pro". We still get forlorn customers asking us if the old version is still available and if it's being supported on more recent OS releases.

Enterprise-wise, they've completely ditched the Xserve while rolling Xsan into the OS. Interest in implementing Xsan has subsequently dropped into almost non-existence. And running the metadata controller for a SAN on a platform with no redundant power supply is just, well, FUCKING STUPID. So this new machine has no niche there.

Looking at the way the thing's put together, I'm guessing that much like the recent MacBooks, what you buy is going to be what you're stuck with, with minimal components being upgradeable, if any.

But let's be serious here. Apple aren't really interested in the "Professional" market anymore. They make comparatively little there when compared to how much they get from consumer devices such as the iPhone & iPad.

Who are they really aiming at here besides hipsters and Nathan Barley clones?

I would have gone with a round-edged triangular case to match the internal frame. Not sure how I feel about the shared cooling either since any one component will increase the overall heat of the others.

What kind of moron cares what their computer looks like?... I'm looking at the monitor when I use it...

setting the aesthetic aside, that's a lot of computer in a very small package. if they price it under $2000 it would be tempting... but since current gen MacPros run $2500-3800 i'm thinking it's not for me.

Under $2000, not likely with that kind of hardware. It would be tempting if it started at $2500.

i have a minty fcp 1.0 in the box mint!! it came with a secret super version of quicktime a 4.beta something, what made it special was it could output to firewire !! no official version has ever done that and 4.b only came on the very first fcp1.0 disks!

macs used to be for 10% of the people

now theyre for 90% of the people.

obviously the product has changed focus.

this was absolutely horrible to me!

ive had years to get over it tho and now i get a right good laugh when i see people photoing at events useing an ipad, or old people (or young) poking and dragging away like an idiot at an ipad ! lol

Meh... I think that's a bit overpriced for a device that'll be obsolete in 5 years and worth a 10th of it's current price. That's my main problem with most electronics though, the drop in value vs what they do for me don't add up hence why I haven't bought a new PC in over a decade. If it kept it's value or was useful for a bit longer I wouldn't be as opposed to plunking down so much cash on a device.

edit: The exception to the above however is when it helps with your work and you actually make money using the tool.

Morons buy systems like that all the time and then use like 1% of it's capabilities then complain to me when youtube videos don't work.

As for my car, honestly with the problems I've had with it the last week I wouldn't be surprised if it isn't worth much in 5 years...
