"John Carmack, who has become interested in focusing on things other than game development at id, has resigned from the studio," said id studio director Tim Willits in a statement to Gamasutra.
A sad day

For the record, the average "gaming career" for devs is less than a decade (yes...it can break people and ruin lives). Carmack lugged it out longer than most would ever dream.

I'd love to hear some of these horror stories. Last year's PAX East had a panel with a bunch of guys that coded some original arcade games, and some console to arcade ports. It was interesting to hear the challenges they faced, and how nearly all of them left the gaming industry many, many years ago. These days, there are much better tools for development, but the business demand vs development quality/stress problem will always be there.
Oh yea, and that's sad to hear that Carmack left. It's not so sad knowing that his focus is on VR.

There are loads, but they're basically all the same story, with mostly the same results: people leave the industry. Divorces, mental-breakdowns, people quitting the industry in disgust because of the pressure/stress and the long hours it demands...these things happen all the time and it's so common nobody blinks when it happens anymore.
I myself was first introduced to this "gaming industry phenomenon" during my first few weeks at Crytek...which were my first few weeks in the industry. Boy...was I green and ignorant. I won't say names or positions but in one instance during a design meeting one of the more experienced staff - out of the blue - slammed his fist down onto the table and SCREAMED at us that the job was ruining his life and his wife was leaving him. Needless to say there was a moment of shocked silence from everyone in the room (there were only 5 of us) before that same person jumped right back onto the meeting topic and spent the rest of the day acting like his outburst didn't happen. I felt so horrible for him. Long story short: he quit the industry entirely just before Far Cry was released, chased his wife back to their home country and got reunited. I'm happy to say that the gaming industry, with its propensity to attract selfish narcissists who are only there to get famous, didn't change one man's priorities.

The VERY FIRST STORY is exactly why I'm not a huge fan of working with programmers.
(sorry to programmers who might take offence..but seriously...I'm not sorry I said it)

lol
Let's do some simple math:
- amount of cash spent on diapers, food, toys, clothing, edumication, all the gas you'll burn just bringing all your shit home and possible future abortions for your 7 redneck teenage whore daughters = "astronomical"
- amount spent on an illegal-alien Mexican housekeeper = "A bag of oranges"
You picked the wrong option, douchenozzle. U lose...

I'll push back on testers if a bug report sounds improbable or like user error. But only an idiot wouldn't cherish having someone else to test shit for them. Testing is boring as shit. I don't know how they do it for a living.
The thing that drives me fucking nuts is how often testers leave out all detail or make exaggerated declarations. Wastes both of our time if I have to spend hours playing the guessing game.

About time... he did roughly jack-shit for id over the past decade. He's a relic who had his time, id needs someone with new ideas and innovation to push things forward.

He's a programmer, not a designer. He was at the forefront of pretty much every single leap in graphics engine innovation. He is a huge lose to the gaming community.
