Stars: Tom Cruise, Emily Blunt, Bill Paxton (who I was searching for when I found mention of this movie)
Tom Cruise! yes I know he's not to everyone's liking but he wasn't that bad in Oblivion was he?
This is not the end - sounds like a (male) Portal voice?
Discuss...

Did you design them too? I got a very strong Warhammer 40k vibe from a lot of elements in that clip.

We made and designed them around concepts produced by the art dept. Obviously artistically they're worried about how they look whereas we had to make them actually be wearable and work. They're based on two existing military suits, I think one is called the Raytheon, there are some youtube clips of it. I was in the mould shop for the first part of production, then I spent the rest of my time on set repairing them between takes after the stunt boys tore them apart. It was fun

so you are saying the industry is fucked and you blame the consumer for forcing you to work on these projects?

Yeah indeed, most of the ranting GFY can apply directly to Hollywood and the movie industry. There are so many egos and such offensive sums of money involved that people completely lose perspective and forget that they're actually just making a bit of a shit film. The main problem I have, especially on my current job as I'm involved in art dept. conceptual stuff, is that there are basically two governing bodies behind a big film, there's the people wanting to make a piece of original entertainment with good narrative and artistic merit and then there are the people who want to make money and who finance the initial overheads and the two parties just fucking bicker constantly and never make any decisions until it's too late to make what they want anyway and it ends with bad comprise which means both parties and the audience are left short changed.
I don't really care that much though because essentially I get paid lots to make cool shit and keep my head below the politics

Something I've been wondering lately, what happens to all the props and various production items after the movie is finished? Does the crew get to take anything home? Does the studio retain rights to it all? Are you bound by contract not to recreate anything (or anything similar) on your own?

They belong to the production. Another thing depressing about this industry is the waste. The majority of stuff goes into containers and then a few years later gets scrapped after decisions about sequels are made. We destroyed a load of batman stuff to make space for the exosuits. Important things do get archived these days, we took Cruise's suit to storage and I sat in the tumbler surrounded by Harry Potter shite making BROOM BROOM noises.

I tinkered a little into making molds and replicas. Made a replica of a 1933 Rolls Royce Emily. Turned out not too bad for my third replica ever.
I bought the Grande Illusions book by Tom Savini lately as that's what I'd ultimately like to do, as a hobby. He writes he could recycle quite a lot of models, masks and whatnot from older productions in his next projects. OK, that was 20 years ago when he wrote that book.
Has that changed nowadays and everything is taken into those containers by the production company and you literally exclusively sell your copyright on the parts?
I'm assuming you're either working as a freelancer or for a prop design company.

Yeah, I have no copyright or ownership over what I make. I'm freelance and I work for production companies which get set up on a temporary basis by Warner Brothers or Disney etc. Everything anybody produces for the film belongs to them.
