That Uzbekistan massacre...

Certainly 500 (according to international aid workers) and maybe as much as 2000 people (according to protestors) were killed by goverment forces last saturday. To put that number of casualties into perspective, even the low estimate is a lot higher than the amount of people killed in Tianamen square in '89. Unfortunately Uzbekistan is a very important chess piece on the chess board of the Great Game, so presumably absolutely nothing will be done against it.

officially it's a republic, but you're right, there's little decision-making and power besides the president. Was confused with Turkmenistan or whatever.

Our great ally Boris Yeltsin groomed him for the position. Yeltsin was OK imo, he just picked badly.

Turkmen Drivers Required To Know President's Book To Get License
Drivers in Turkmenistan will now be required to pass a test on their knowledge of President Niyazov's book "Rukhnama" before they may receive their licenses, RTR reported on 2 August. A Niyazov decree published in state media on 2 August specifies that all drivers first complete a 16-hour course on "Rukhnama."

State news quoted Niyazov as saying the move is aimed at "ensur[ing] that future drivers are educated in the spirit of high moral values of Turkmenistan's society."

Niyazov's "Rukhnama" is already required course material in Turkmenistan's schools, from elementary to university levels, and is kept in state-controlled mosques alongside copies of the Koran.

"Rukhnama" is the Turkmen president's spiritual guide for proper behavior by the Turkmen people. (Reuters)

With all the coming oil wars, I wouldn't be surprised if several countries showed their true colors and went back to more fascist/autocratic style leaderships. It's easy during war time you know.

Just look at what we're doing. :(

Whether they got involved or stayed out of it you'd still blame them ,so whats the difference?
Have you ever thought that just the presence of the US there may be the spark that is igniting freedom and a democracy movement there?
But it matters not because they'll probably sink into a theocratic dictatorship and just kill their people more quietly for things like a woman showing a little ankle.
