UHD-2

...
Hans Hoffmann, Senior Manager and Head of Media Fundaments and Production Unit at the EBU (European Broadcasting Union) ...

When talking about the current crop of 4K TVs, Hans called them "Quad HD," since they have exactly four times the number of pixels as so-called Full HD but no other enhancements beyond HDTV. This is also referred to by the EBU as "UHD Phase 1" or "UHD-1," which retains all other aspects of current HDTV, such as BT.709 (often called Rec.709) colorimetry, dynamic range, and frame rates.

The next stop on the UHD roadmap is UHD-2, which is expected to be implemented in 2016 to 2018 and should include BT.2020 colorimetry, frame rates up to 120 fps, bit depth up to 12 bits for high dynamic range, and immersive audio of some sort. Finally, UHD-3 retains the characteristics of UHD-2 but with a pixel resolution of 7680x4320 (so-called "8K"); this is being promoted mostly by Japan and is expected to emerge sometime between 2020 and 2025.

So basically they make it quite clear it's pretty stupid to invest in the 4K craze now.

there is really no craze in the market. just the industry popping out the next thing, because ... well, they need to stay in business. Unlike 1080p when it came out which actually had some content to justify it (atleast things were already there ready to put them to use.). 4K as of right now has no leg to stand on...NONE. Other than some kind of specialized computer monitor, and possibly some kind of multi view television setup, and that's pushing the envelope of excuses.

If any of them are being sold right now, they are being picked up buy some 'gloves off' gadget freaks that simply must have it all IMMEDIATELY.

I usually don't judge gadget freaks, but 4K right now is just grounds for a bitch slappin.

Prices will fall, people will replace their old set with a new one, then it becomes the norm and the next big thing is announced

Finally, we'll be able to watch shitty unwatchable movies the way they were meant to be seen

problem is you can't 'become a norm' without content. do you really believe that the cable industry is going to upgrade again so soon? I can maybe see Hollywood catching up a little sooner, but everything else is going to suffer.

when they pushed 780 / 1080 on us, the things before it were fairly long lasting, so making that jump felt welcomed in most part.. but asking us to do it all over again so soon is a bit much.

all these hardwired standards, need to fuck off. something a little more ambiguous in nature is going to have to come into play, cause people will eventually get tired of doing this every couple of years.

Don't forget playing games on an engine built around rendering it at 720p.

Most movies are already being shot and processed at 4K. In production and post, it's pretty much standard now. 8K, not so much.

But even so, stuff shot primarily for TV is pretty much all being shot and edited at 1080.

Personally, I don't see a consumer market for 4K, let alone 8K. Most homes aren't big enough to accommodate the screen sizes necessary to do the formats justice.

The reason Japan want to skip 4K and go straight to 8K is cause they'd rather make one transition than go to the trouble of making two.

It'll become the norm wether people like it or not imo, a long way down the line 4k will become cheap and 4k sets will sell for the same price as 1080p now thanks to tech junkies wanting the bestest products and helping brands refine the manufacturing process. It'll be forced on us, 1080p will be supported so they can view their 1080p shows, more people will have 4k sets then more content follow due to demand, the more demand the cheaper the prices and the more people will want it - creating yet more demand. Dunno about the US but it took fucking AGES for the UK to provide HD channels without paying top dollar to your provider and people still bought them because standard definition was already being phased out by the manufacturers, everything started supporting HD. These tech junkies buying 4k sets will fund their broadcasters upgrades after the manufactures created a market for them to exploit. Like they did with HD, eventually driving the broadcast prices down and increasing demand for the shows.

It might be a case of TVs supporting 4k and 8k and adding UHD as opposed to Quad ?, like a lot of TVs atm support 720p/1080i/p but manufacturers need to keep thinking of new shit to sell their TVs and won't give a shit how they get there.

^^ Well said losCHUNK but that is consumerism methinks :smirk:

Me stupid too so guess I will wait.

Well I was pretty stupid, come technology.

Firstly: I bought a plasma TV in the early days. It had to be top of the line and big of course. A Panasonic 42 inches, but with no tuner it was basically a monitor as we know 'em today. Trouble was it cost as much as a small car in those days, like $13K AUD; still, I kept on saying to the knockers ... "It is only money"

Secondly, historically now, I bought a top line VCR, yes years ago, but get this, it was a Beta.

I researched and found TV stations were using this proven format so I decided it was for me.

Yes, you guessed it. If you know me you would know, before buying, I research best I can.

Well, you know (I think) Betamax lasted a couple of years until the video rental shops stopped stocking Beta cassette rentals. How quick was I to change to the then, more popular VHS format.

Thankfully, I never got into, but then I was probably too young to of course, get into 8 track audio :)
I do remember fondly my first employer showing off his new quadrophonic stereo*. Hello Lou.

* He did mean hi-fi and not 'stereo' by the way, but he was the boss.

You and I know that, but most people don't and the television industry doesn't care. They want you to believe 4K is a necessity so they'll sell more TV's.
